Some cheap PC bargains for anyone wanting something new :)

Dell

Dimension 3000, 2.66ghz, 512mb ram, 16x DVDRW, 160gb hard drive, 17" TFT monitor, speakers, Win XP etc £361 delivered. Good all round system for the price.

Click on home
Scroll down the page to Dell e-value
Use code 101-D03306a
change warranty to 1 Year Collect and Return Service [subtract £105.75]
£361 delivered, including a TFT monitor is a very good price.

You can also upgrade the processor
Intel® Pentium® 4 processor with HT technology (3.0GHz, 800fsb, 1MB cache) [add £11.75]
which again is (probably) even better value

Possibly an even better value system would be

101-D03306

again, warranty down to 1 year collect and return
memory change to 256MB Dual Channel DDR400 (2x128MB)
upgrade (yep weird) processor Intel® Pentium® 4 processor with HT technology (3.0GHz, 800fsb, 1MB cache)

And whole system delivered with a 17" CRT (rather than the TFT) is only £178 :o

For anyone wanting just a TFT I have found this company to be the cheapest

Any advice gratefully recieved . My Panasonic CF T1 has started cutting out for no good reason . It seems clear as that it is the battery pack as a colleague has the same computer and mine ran OK on his battery pack without problems and a complete up to date anti virus scan found nothing .

Anyone know where I can get a replacement?

Is this your laptop's battery? what you need to be aware of with laptop batteries ( as with all rechargables ), is that when using the laptop with just the battery, you must run the battery all the way down each time you use it. If you just use say, 35% and then recharge the battery, it will decrease the battery's life span ( we've probably all seen this with camcorders running out after about 10 minutes ). Do this James, and your battery should be fine for years.

I am aware of that dave and it is not a battery life problem . It is a cutting out so that the battery will show 99% full then the computer just cust out like as if someoen has pulled the plug out of the telly . You start it up and the abttery still shows 99% and then five minutes later it does it again

Have you got, or know someone with, a spare battery with which you can test it?

Could be a heat issue - have you noticed it getting warmer than usual during use? Are the fans coming on as usual?

Or, a hardware conflict - have you connected any new peripherals to it recently? Have you had to open it up for any reason?

I have used a colleagues battery- computer was fine.

I have not noticed it being a heat problem . It happens shortly after starting up - then you re start it seems ok for a few minutes and then it cuts out .

Only hardware is a USB memory stock but had been using that for several weeks without any problem ..

Trig any ideas mate ?

First of all what operating system are you using?

Are all the settings in power management set to 1 hour?

Is the battery holding a full charge? To find this out look at power meter in the power settings when running on battery only and see how quickly they charge level drops if it drops very quickly then battery probably suffering from memory effect.

Check the following assuming you use Windows XP / 2000:

Right click on desktop
Left click properties
Left click screen saver
Left click power settings
Left click power schemes
Set these to whatever you like
Left click hibernate, turn off!

Hope this sorts it, if it doesn't, and your bettery is fully charged at start, it's new battery time.

If it doesn't power on when you press the switch for a second time then it sounds like it is in hibernate mode.....

Finally it might be something silly like a faulty clip which is no longer holding the battery firmly in place.
