Was This A Good Year ?

Jeebus, that`s a lot of coin. I can understand the first year`s edition going for that but £800+ seems excessive.

Here's a question ~ also on sale is a copy of Timeform Racehorses 1979, but who is the horse pictured on the right (outside of the field) on the dustjacket. Vague bonus point for the race pictured and the winner.

Isn't it TROY - he won just about everything in 1979! They're going right-handed, so there's a good chance it's the Diamond Stakes at Ascot.

Do they look like Weinstock colours ?

They look like the M Lolshan colours and that looks like Lester up - but I don't recall Lester ever riding that horse . Is it Goodwood ?

I think they ARE the Weinstock's - orange and black, and it does look more like Lester's big nose, to be honest! It could be Goody, if there are houses in the background somewhere on the course.

Weinstock colours are the same as Ballymacoll now - light bluey/grey

I think it is the 1979 Waterford Crystal Mile and the winner was Kris - though that looks more like Eddery than Mercer . I give up

So who's orange and black halves? (Or it could be orange and v. dark brown or blue.) I give up, too. Over to Brian... <_<

Please see emoticon above...

... and the reason JELLABY should be a grey, is because the Jellaby (also sometimes transliterated Jellabi, Jallaby, etc.) strain of Arabians is always (drum roll)..... GREY! Boom, boom!

Still thinking about this, but its not Kris, he was chestnut and its not Goodwood either. I think its Salisbury .

So he was - but did Lester ride at Salisbury in those days - he was very picky in the late 70s

Woe is me!

I can only apologise profusely for my idiocy and beg the forgiveness of my fellow members ~ I have spent an entire night tossing and turning knowing that I have led you all up the garden path. Oh, the shame!!

Ridiculous question in the first place and a more ridiculous answer from yours truly ~ I can only cite in my defence that I didn't watch any flat racing (except on telly each Saturday ~ none of your big midweek meetings) and was under the impression from an earlyish age that I recognised the picture. Having now seen the wonderful Jellaby in photographic form I cringe with embarrassment. Woe is....oh sorry, I've already done that.

The question is now much trickier as this is no big race at all. It is in fact a maiden race for 3yo's at Salisbury, and the jockey in question is one Lester Keith Piggott.

Is it Lester on Alnasr Ashamali owned by E Alkhalifa on 27 th JUne , winning a 10f race at Salisbury - could be those colours .

I'm virtually certain you're correct ~ the owner I believe was Sheikh Essa Al Khalifa. His nephew, Sheikh Isa bin Abdullah al Khalifa once owned a fairly useful grey called Jellaby Askhir who raced in the same, or very similar colours. That might just be where yer man here first got confused :shy:

(Of course, Sheikh Isa and Sheikh Essa may be one and the same person ~ the names of Arab dignitaries tend to have various forms. Sheikh Essa is the son of Abdullah, who I can't claim to know personally, unless he worked on a building site in Qatar with my dad in the early '70's which is unlikely, but not entirely impossible) :D

In Lester's biography by Dick Francis there is a list of all the races he won before 1985 . It is not infallible but he rode two winners that year at Salisbury . One was Columnist for Jeremy Tree and Jock Whitney ( certainly not those colours ) the other was for Ron Boss and Essr Alk - no name is given to the race though
