You have to assume that when the Emir of Qatar splashed the cash a few months ago it was because he wants to compete and win at the very top level. I doubt he is that much interested in winning a Class5 at Catterick. You also have to assume his advisers knew what they were doing and have provided him with the strongest contenders they could find as well as good blood lines.
I’ve been paying particular attention to their runners and there are four of them at the Newmarket July meeting:
Space Legend 1:50 Thursday
It’s difficult to see past Ancient Wisdom in this, although he has yet to run up to the promise he showed last season and maybe he is worth opposing. Space Legend was well beaten by the Aga Khan’s Calandagan, but he was fairly easily the best of the rest in the King Edward VII at Ascot and had only just failed in the Cocked Hat at Goodwood after a troubled run. Wouldn’t put it past him overturning the favourite.
Electrolyte 2:25 Thursday
Was second in a blanket finish to the Coventry at Ascot - you have to go down to eighth place to find a horse two lengths behind the winner - which doesn’t speak loudly for the form. Columnist was third in that race and it ma be best to see how Electrolyte goes to inform Columnist’s chances on the Saturday.
Native American 4:45 Thursday
I’m not sure about this one, I know Fahey thinks a lot of him. He earned his highest rating at Epsom in the Surrey (Listed) coming second in a sustained duel with the winner, but he was found out in the Group3 Jersey at Ascot. Back in Listed this time and it may be more his cup of tea.
Columnist 3:25 Saturday
