Hae just beem awoken by.... well, not sure really? At first, I thought it was a good old fashioned storm, as it appeared to be lightening flickering but I've been watching for the past 10 minutes and weirdly, I can see stars and can't hear any thunder at all. Obviously, the electric is still working.

I suppose it's an electric storm of some sort but very unudual for this country and this time of year - anyone else seeing it ?

No, I haven't been drinking, downing chemical substances (illegal or otherwise) or seeing aliens either!

Probably just a localised thunderstorm. We used to get a few like that when I lived in Bordeaux.

I can confirm the storm, Songsheet. In Caterham there was much lightning, very little thunder, and buckets of torrential rain.

We are having torrential rain at the moment and some extremely long and loud rumbles of thunder. Haven't seen any lightning yet though. And now Sky has just gone off. As long as its back by this afternoon.

We get several damn good electrical storms here, usually in the summer after a particularly humid spell. Often we have them as you describe it Jules, with no rain whatsoever & lightning only, although we usually get a few thunderclaps in the middle of them. I love electrical storms - they are great to watch! It's great here as you can sometimes see a thunderstorm across the Straits, above Morocco, whilst the weather is fine here.

Changing the subject slightly - we had an abnormally clear day here last week & as I drove out of San Roque on my way back from the yard, there was the most amazing view across to Morocco. It was so very clear; there is usually some sort of a haze so that you can't make much out, only the shape of the Atlas mountains & the such. That day it was so clear it was startling; the Atlas mountains seemed to be only a couple of miles away; I could clearly see the beaches & settlements; even small boats by the coastline, back to another range of mountains in the distance behind the Atlas mountains. It is such an impressive sight, seeing the Pillars Of Hercules like that - the Rock on one side with Mt Acho on the other - you can fuly understand why a lot of the ancient civilisations thought it to be the gateway to the world.

Exactly the same phenomenon down here in Dorset - no thunder or rain, just very regular flashes of lightning. Sat and watched it for ages!
