Here’s the notes on the two I’m waiting for:
RED POPPY
Doncaster, Sunday March 28th*
32red.com Handicap, 7f
This was a big field (18 runners) and Red Poppy raced behind the leading pack, she got badly squeezed 3 furlongs out and retreated to the back. She came again only to be repeatedly checked just over a furlong out. Still she kept on, but was eased towards the end finishing 7th. I reckon she would at least have been involved in the finished had she not encountered so much trouble. She might try a mile, but 7 furlongs may prove best.
Following the race, James Doyle reported that RED POPPY, placed seventh, was denied a clear run approaching 1½ furlongs out.
THE ROSSTAFARIAN
15/4 Craven - Newmarket
Slowly into stride, in rear, short of room 4f out, switched left and pushed along on outer over 2f out, stayed on from over 1f out (op 18/1 tchd 11/1). Raced in rear, but baulked twice by winner (see below) and still last at the furlong marker, made up a lot of late ground to finish 6l fifth running the last furlong faster than all but the winner. Pretty sure he’ll do better.
An enquiry was held to consider interference passing the 4 furlong marker when the winner, MASTER OF THE SEAS (IRE), ridden by William Buick, interfered with THE ROSSTAFARIAN (IRE), placed fifth, ridden by Andrea Atzeni. Buick was suspended for 3 days for careless riding as he manoeuvred left-handed when insufficiently clear of THE ROSSTAFARIAN (IRE), causing Atzeni to have to take a significant check. It was noted that shortly thereafter, MASTER OF THE SEAS (IRE) shifted right-handed as a consequence of Buick correcting the colt, leaving him awkwardly placed on the heels of AKMAAM (FR), unplaced, and Buick therefore having to move MASTER OF THE SEAS (IRE) left-handed which caused THE ROSSTAFARIAN (IRE) to be further checked by Atzeni.
