Having closely scrutinised the latest legislation, I am pretty certain that I am legally able to have any Weimaraner puppies I shall breed docked. My vet is willing to do so (as long as there are no material changes between the bitch being bred and the puppies arriving), Hattie is a certified working bitch (my vet is a guest gun on the shoot annually, so can certify same), I have a registered Gamekeeper who will also certify she is worked and nearly all my puppy requests to date are from working homes.

So I am going to take the plunge and breed her in a few days time. If anyone knows of anyone who shoots and who is looking for a puppy with good potential, please PM me. This is a repeat mating of Hat's last litter - ten beautiful offspring who (so far anyway) have been healthy dogs with excellent temperaments.

I know many find docking offensive and this topic isn't designed to provoke a lengthy debates into the pros and cons, although feel free if you want to have a pop - I am not 'biting' as I understand this is an emotive subject and, I am afraid, unless you genuinely shoot over dogs of your own, it might be quite difficult to understand the justification. If there is one, of course!! :P

Of course, if you don't want a docked breed, then no problem, you don't have to have one anymore, even if it was always a traditionally docked breed.

And if you're anti-field sports, then it's irrelevant whether we're talking docked or undocked anyway!

Songsheet, Weimaraners are the best dogs ever!! I have two friends who breed them and all the puppies are docked. I haven't got a strong opinion either way on docking. I did meet an un-docked weimar a few weeks ago and its tail was pretty dangerous in confined spaces!!

Puppies born after 06/04/07 will not be eligible to be shown where there is a fee paying public but this is quite amusing, as very few Shows charge - they get their revnue from the exhibitors and quite a few shows will not be happy at losing in the short term quite a considerable swathe of exhibitors. I know that new exhibitors will emerge and the breeds will continue, albeit with probably a slightly different breed standard. Many breeders - especially novice ones - will breed for a particular set, length and thickness of tail, to the detriment of other far more important considerations.

However, even Breed championship shows will still legally be able to accept entries from post 06/04/07 docked dogs, as they don't charge entrance fees and never have.

I doubt the KC will do anything to support traditionally docked working breeds (I don't agree with purely cosmetic and unnaturally short docks as per boxers, corgi etc) at their show, Crufts but it is pretty simply got around - they would just have the first hall filled with rings of those docked breeds, where the public can pass through on their way to the turnstiles where they do pay - ie, they choose to pay for the rest of the Show and gain access to all the commercial stands, ! Job done but, of course, it's controversial.

I am wondering if I could contest paying the full registration fee for each of my puppies, as they would be precluded from some of the KC's activities....

However, too much effort, methinks!!

And your point is, DO ?

Most unusual DO. Although they're energetic dogs they're very rarely aggressive.

Good luck with that lot Songsheet. Mines nearly three now and he's still a complete loon. I've been told he'll grow out of it when he's about twelve though.

My mother had a chunk taken out of her arm by a Jack Russell when stroking him. I was bitten by my aunt's fat old Lab, just for walking past her. Our German Shepherd bitch had a 50p-size piece gnashed out of her chest when playing with an English Bull Terrier... to all of which, so what? On the wrong day, at the wrong time, even a Chihuahua can get peevish. They're not robots. Julie's Weis are absolutely gorgeous, charming, and completely unaggressive. Boisterous and full of fun, but not a mean streak in any of them. I love visiting her farm and seeing them run and run for hours, having the best time ever. And then there's Molly, the adorable, soulful ginger Vizsla... :) More pictures, please!

When I first went into Weis some 28 years ago, their temperament was indeed 'iffy'. Orginally, many were direct German imports and, at that time, the german breeders had strict breeding controls and criteria and they weren't meant to be 'family pets' on the whole, so some agression (as they were used quite heavily throught their police forse0 was useful to them.

Many, many years of careful breeding for temperament since those early days has resulted in a breed that rarely displays bad temperament, although, as DO says above, it certainly does resurface from time to time. Also many are purchased by totally unsuitable owners wanting a 'designer dog' and they simply can't cope with them. But to label a breed because of one bad example is plain stupid.

The breed is utterly loyal, very smart for a canine, boisterous as Jon says and basically full on. And mine are living in pretty much an ideal enviroment on the farm and worling two days a week during the shooting season. For which I get paid!! When Giles was four, I had a bitch that had some four week old puppies and his entire class came to visit and sit with the pups and their mum, being scrambled over and chewed and not one child was scared or came to any harm. I don't suppose that would happen now!!

One of my favourite breeds. I used to work with a guy whom bred them for shows. He used to bring in the pups to work. Gorgeous little creatures. And yes they had their tails docked.

Especially a chihuahua - nasty, stroppy, pathetic, neurotic, pointless non-dogs that they are!!!!! :P

Jules, I wish you'd have bred from your bitch 6 months ago & then I might have been able to home one or two with me rather than the stupid, boisterous, spoilt, stubborn, disobedient pair of springer bitches that I have!!!! Nah, they're lovely but I'm not a massive springer fan & these two are very ignorant, not least as Dad spoils them rotten & lets them get away with murder. They have both been warned though - the Dom Education Programme has started!!!
