Despite the message that only .gif, .jpeg, .jpg - among others - will be accepted as an avatar (and they are all that I use) whatever I try to put up results in the mressage "You are not allowed to upload that type of file as an avatar or personal photo"!!!

I used to change the pictures at will but I have had this problem for a number of months. I've tried to PM Col but his inbox is full. He is obviously away for Christmas, but last time he was unable to fathom out what was causing the problem.

It doesn't matter whether I'm trying to use an image from the net or from my own PC, the message is the same. Doesn't it drive you bloody mad at times?

I've found that the only way I can change my avatar is to upload it on FF then use that web address as the avatar. Any other web address is seemingly too long (it won't allow it) & if I try to use an image from my PC, again, I can't use it. You're not the only one, LordH!!

Copy and Paste the picture into Windows Paint.
File Save As > (JPG if a photo or GIF it is a graphic)
Upload it to some webspace/photo host etc.
Try again with the new URL.

Your avatar must be no bigger than 64 pixels by 64 pixels in size. Uploaded avatars from your computer must be no larger than 20 KB.
The following file types are allowed: gif .jpeg .jpg .swf .png

Your Current Avatar

URL Location 61x64
Pre-installed avatars
Choose an avatar from one of our galleries Base Gallery IPB Community Pack Smiley Avatars

Your image avatars
Enter a URL to an online avatar image (Restore)
Upload a new image from your computer
Image Scale On
(This will scale the image down for you if it's too big in pixel size)

COPIED FROM MY AVATAR PAGE IN CONTROL

I'd be fairly confident that Brian can read, Merlin!!

I think there is some kind of gremlin in the avatar system for sure & I'm sure that is what Brian is talking about - he has followed the instructions to the letter, I'm sure.

I had no end of trouble when I was first trying to get myself an avatar. In the end the only way I could do it was if I put it on Photobucket first.

Merlin, my page reads exactly the same as your page - what a coincidence!

I always use Final Furlong and have done so since trigger invited me to and I have ACDSee rather than photobucket. So I'm afraid that there is nothing new in all the helpful remarks - for which I thank you any way.

I hope that Col can help me when he comes back.

I had trouble with mine and had to get Alan to do it for me in the end - bless him - would like to change it, but am so useless.......
The point of this being that I was getting the same message as Brian. :(

Are first break through???

you cannot use an image from your own pc unless you upload it through a known up loader i.e. photobucket etc etc so that eliminates that one.......... :P I can because I have my own site and up-loader built in to my p/c now after hours of work that’s why the photo's I post on here i.e. Flowers etc are on my own site and go straight onto here.....

AND I’ll think why you cant load basic gifs or jpegs because on here we have a size reduction software built in ...................so regardless as to what you choose it should post on here??? In reduced format size for your avatar...........
I’ll have a think about that? :o

Yes you can. That is why when you go to "Update Avatar" you see two boxes:

Enter a URL to an online avatar image
and
Upload a new image from your computer

Brian your missing the point... its only if you have your own site obviously you may say but it worked before?? well they may have changed the format now so you actually need an up-loader that's what I would have thought....

try this one on your avatar its a little oversize but lets see what happens ....

5.gif

It has changed for some reason I just posted this image to include it on my page but it said this .......Sorry, dynamic pages in the tags are not allowed...

but it still comes out on this page, see above its the same one I have given you as your avatar so try it and see what happens............

:o right you'll see it loaded as my avatar no problems you may think but there was a problem I could not post it at first!!! why you may ask!!! well another mistake that seems very apparent is as follows.....

When you select the avatar you want to post and then offer it into your avatar settings control box you may find after posting it it will not show......

Well the answer is this if you check the address you just posted in your avatar setting.... you will see a double entry of http/: you must only have one of these at the beginning of the address bar not two it will not work with two of them ...

Sorted.............. ;) :P

Thank you Merlin. I would have spotted that. And I'm not missing any point I'm afraid - I have put up many avatars over the years. I spent some time with Col on this problem earlier in the year and he couldn't solve it. I had to let him post my avater as site controller.

Sorry Brian it must be a fault your end then or with the software that's obviously affecting your set up on this forum :( :( ...................
