Right, bored at work, so rather than doing anything remotely constructive I have decided to seek out the racecourses of Britain and Ireland on Google Earth.

Where are they?

More specifically. Where is the Curragh in relation to Dublin? (Place names nearby would be the biggest help).

Simmo, do you think Magellan asked his buddies where the Straits were? You've got flippin' Google at your fingertips and you're bored - go on, gyrate a bit and find out for yourself, you lazy bugger!

Resolution is pish in most areas on this thing. Am I correct in saying that it is very slightly east of the town of Kildare? Can't see a damn thing if it is.

You can make out the winning post at Aintree and Newmarket though. Off to Epsom now.

I believe poor resolution is often deliberately pish - you can probably get a close-up of a lizard in the Mexican desert, but some countries' governments have denied Google the right to show their urban and 'sensitive' areas in anything other than very general terms. Something to do with not wanting to assist terrorists too much. Try it over Area 51... oops! Did your pc suddenly shut down? :o

Ran into Ascot on the way to Epsom - the old stands seem to be quite some distance back from the track. Does no one actually watch the racing there?

Kri, cities tend to have the most resolution. Countryside areas with nothing of huge interest but some trees have the worst resolution.

At some point, move over to Saudi Arabia and tell me how much resolution you've got over Makkah (Mecca), for example, simmo. And don't forget Area 51 in the USA...

The curragh is a military base. I'm sure Google would be blocked from viewing the highly sensative training manouvres such as how to play a pair of 10s in Texas Holdem and what to do in the face of a bin collection strike.

Mecca is slightly more visible than the stands at Epsom. I take it that the big white thing in the middle is yon big mosque thingy?

Now if you could just be a bit more specific than "Nevada Desert, USA" I'll seek out Area 51.

Mel, you are becoming my favourite poster on this site.

Try some of the US air bases in Britain - surprisingly clear images. You can see planes on the ground, the lot.

Hmmm, nuclear subs in Norfolk, VA, AH-64 Apache helicopters at Edwards AFB, Minuteman nuclear missile silos at Minot AFB.

Sod the racecourses, this is much more fun.

Try finding Saints rugby ground and let me know if you do, it doesn't seem to exist on my google world :(
I take it you mean St Helens IS?

If so I have located what I believe to be a rugby ground - is it on Knowesley Rd?

Yep that's the one on Knowsley Road, near the Black Bull pub (you don't wana go in there thats for sure lol), just checking it's still there as I live about 1/2 mile from it.

If you have your eye altitude at about 25000 ft, and mark the roads, go east from Kildare until the main road turns from green to blue. Directly North of where the blue road starts going east for about 4 inches is the Curragh.
