Two wines I can recommend this weekend

First , for any Waitrose customers Cheverny Domaine du Salvard 2004 @ £5.99 - an excellent Sauvignon based white with just a 10% dash of Chardonnay - like good Sancerre but cheaper - might be on offer if you are lucky - I got some for £4.49

and more widely available a wine from South Africa - Porcupine Ridge Syrah/Shiraz - about £6 - deep dark red but quite high in alcohol - excellent for barbecues .- available from Somerfield and Waitrose

Time and time again I see recommendations of various wines and foods from Waitrose but there isn't one anywhere near me! One day I'm going to make a trip to my nearest one (wherever that is) and fill up my car with wine and nice food.

Maurice - you old wag !

Excellent with barbecued food as it is full bodied and can cope well with the strong flavours .

I like Gewurztraminers with a barbeque. Better still my wife doesn't like them so I get the full bottle.

My newly discovered idea of a decent value bottle of wine is Menetou-Salon. Just like Sancerre, but about a two thirds of the price. I haven't seen any in the supermarkets yet but I'm still going through the stock I brought back from France, which should see me well into the new year.
