I would be grateful if anyone can enlighten me as to whether or not I can take my lap top away with me to a place with no phones/internet access, and be able to somehow connect to the internet wirelessly via my mobile phone or some other means.

It's probably already plainly obvious, but I am completely stupid in understanding computers so idiot speak would be even more gratefully received !

You would need a 3g card (google for more info) unless your laptop and mobile both have bluetooth. In addition you'd need a data contract with one of the mobile companies (your 3g card supplier presumably) to enable you to download from the internet.

First things first you need to either have:

a,) A bluetooth-equipped mobile phone and a bluetooth-equipped laptop/USB bluetooth dongle for your laptop (about £15); or

b,) A cable that connects your laptop to your mobile phone

I would also recommend that you only try this with a GPRS data capable phone as GSM really is painful for data transfer.

How we doing so far?

EDIT: Looks like post crossed with HTs. I don't think 3G is completely necessary but accept that it would help.

Thanks chaps, I knew someone on here could help me on my way.

I bought an Orange Option Globe Trotter Fusion Card, which apparently uses GPRS/GSM or LAN ? depending upon which it can pick up.

Anyway as yet I haven't managed to get it up and running properly, but the very nice technical man on the Orange Idiot Help line said it may take 24 hours to set up properly ?

Anyway, haven't tried it again today as I've been far too busy emptying vast sums of money from my account.

Dearest HT, should Mrs HT ever get fed up of you playing with your dongle, or your curmudgeonly ways ............... I'm yer man, well woman !
