After over 400 years of beer being brewed on its Wandsworth site Young's Brewery is to close. A merger with Charles Wells of Bedford has been annouinced and Young's beers will be produced there.

Very good beer, when i was based in London my local was The Grand Junction Arms, right along side the Grand Union Canal in Harlesden. Very nice pub. :D

They have some fine pubs, too.

Lovely beer.
They have some nice horses too. Until recently the horses lived in the brewery stables in Wandsworth and visitors could go and see them.

Unfortunately, sour commuters complained about the traffic congestion they caused when they went out on their rounds, so they have been banished to the country... h:)

A great sight they were too, Bollin Eric.

Muttley, when the merger was anounced it was said that all Young's brands would be kept separate from those of Charles Wells and that the Young's pubs would continue to trade as Young's (or, perhaps, as a friend of mine who went to live in France would say on journeys back home "Get me to a Youngerie".)

Is that pub right next to Willesden Junction station.I was only in there once -the day that Frankie rode his first Group1 winner at Ascot-Markofdistiction.As a result of that visit I can no longer drink or smell Southern Comfort.

Yes, but I thought the water was supposed to be important to the flavour .. :)

Obviously a lager drinker...
Nope...

Bottled continental lagers for home consumption or when abroad, yes, otherwise I seldom touch UK brands.

I'm mainly a Guinness drinker, failing that I tend to plump for a good strong 'heavy' but you don't get many of those in tied pubs. I find many English bitters close to unpalatable.

Maybe next time time I'm down there one of you can enlighten me as to the merits of your better beers ;)

Luke,
The Grand Junction Arms was very close to Park Royal Hospital, i do know the one that you mentioned outside of Willesden Junction very well, but it was not a Youngs house. :D

Regards.

Terry.

So it's the Youngs drays that have been causing all the traffic congestion in London. Does that mean that the congestion charge will now be abolished?!

Really cracking beer, I don't know if will taste the same brewed in Bedford - I doubt it.

A real shame about the horse-drawn drays disappearing, what will happen to the Shires?

:o When in the Principality BRAINS!! are the makers of the real ale!! highly recommended and for strength their S.A. brand is the in drink its won a few CAMRA awards too...........................

I'm surprised it wasn't also the residents of Wandsworth being sour about the smell from the brewery, never mind commuters being snarky about the horses. We lived a few miles away from the local Castle Lager one in Ndola (Zambia) and the pong off the fresh, wet beer dregs Mum used to fetch (for me to dry out and feed to our horses) was, er, SOUR. Terrible smell when wet, but lovely when dried. And the horses went mad for them, too.
