The 2025 July Cup

My Dad (who wasn't always 💯% accurate 😂) once told me that humans can sprint up to 200 metres, no one ever gets beat at 200 metres because they tired, they simply couldn't run fast enough flat out.

But 400 metres isn't a sprint because the human body isn't designed to sprint that distance and beyond flat out, it's the trip at which humans have to start pacing themselves.

... which sounds not unlike the idea of striding patterns in play.

It's also a very fundamental explanation of why sprinters run faster than horses who run at further trips.

In effect, common sense and physiological fact.

When I was at school there was a guy who could run 100 yards in 11 seconds. I reckon I would have beaten him in a race over five miles.

As I said in an earlier post, I would always fancy a 125 miler to beat a 120 sprinter and a 130 12f horse to beat a 120 10f horse.

Notable Speech will probably win tomorrow but it's because the sprinting division at the moment, or at least those he runs against tomorrow, are G2 horses.

I'm having a kopek each way on No Half Measures. Hopefully it'll be a case of, the faster they go, the better she'll be. It seemed to work well for Time For Sandals in the Commonwealth Cup. There's been nibbles for her in the market aswell.

Best of luck to everyone day, looks a good days racing to try and solve and I've enjoyed reading the forum contributors.

Well done. I don’t think I’d have got that one if I had 10 picks.

Fair chuffed for you, Marb! Enjoy your winnings! Brilliant stuff.

Richard Hughes's horses are running out of their skin.

Last time I saw Richard Hughes, him and his son were literally sharing the same chair, sat next to me and my friend, while they ponced (and made short work of) a free meal each in the O&T at Kempton Park - now he's won a July Cup, fair play! 😂

Just watched the replay.

It looks to me like Night Raider took them along far too fast on the near side causing a pace collapse. We'll see what the sectionals say.

Think back through the years at the number of horses of which it was said " he is fast enough to win a July Cup ".
The proof of the pudding is in the eating.
Notable Speech was beaten less than three lengths, so were six other non classic winners today.
Well done anyone who picked the winner, a horse whose 6 f form read 2111 before today.
Sprints are more specialised than we imagine it seems.

On ORs the first three were rated 105 (+3lbs allowance), 108 and 105. They appear to have run in line with their relative abilities.

Their respective best RPRs were 112 (+3lbs), 111 and 110 (in the last 18 months,118 if you go back to this race two years ago).

They all ran up the far side away from the pace.

They might just not have been able to go the pace and the race has fallen their way. I won't be taking the form at face value, that's for sure.

Brilliant Mart.

Well done Martin. I watched the race on my phone at a wedding in blistering Oxfordshire which was a popular move as several guys came up and wanted to watch too! I’d only had a small interest on Whistlejacket (my fav painting) and wouldn’t have picked the winner out.

Pace collapse indeed.

The winner's closing sectional was 96.84% and only one horse, Jasour, broke 97%.

Night Raider pretty much walked home at 92-ish%.
