The 2025 Longshot Thread

The breeding of Moodofthemoment screams long-distance stayer and this 3m 3f trip should be right up his street. Will go in the ground too. The complete outsider but worth a go at 22/1

Haha! The comedy show started at the tapes and just got funnier. Hehe.

Doncaster 5.03

Pearl Eye has had a pretty dismal year, apart from one good run in the Spring Mile. He's now trained by Gay Kellaway and has dropped down the ratings, and must be of interest in this class of race. My feeling is, he might be a bit slow or a bit of a boat on good or firm ground, which is backed up by the fact he's won on soft and heavy before, so perhaps he can run better today with some proper cut in the ground. At 20/1, sorry to say this again, but I'll pay my money, take my chance.

Cheltenham 2.20 tomorrow. Inch House.
Showed nothing in 2 runs for Nicholls. 11 months off the course. Time for the trainer to work out the problems. Very interesting on his 2nd to Stumptown over c/d last January.
Nicholls can target an early season big pot + fto might be the time to catch him. 25/1.

Sporting life comments in running: "Held up in mid-division, not much room over 2f out, not clear run over 1f out, soon switched right, no impression."

I'd say that was code for 'got stopped repeatedly for three furlongs'.

He wouldn't have won, he might not have even placed, but that was one frustrating watch.

Nevermind. Onwards and upwards.

Or downwards, onwards and upwards, rather.

Galway 4.13 Da Capo Glory

7th in the 2024 Coral Cup, he's had a season off, dropped nearly half a stone in the ratings, yet available at 20/1 or thereabouts. If he isn't a total soft ground dependant, which he might not be, he can run very well tomorrow. He could be a cracking each way bet, (famous last words).

Del Mar

11.05 Qirat has the tactical speed to overcome the draw and can run well from the front here. All that experience in 30+ runner handicaps at Ascot should also stand him in good stead. 🤣😂

Whether he can see it through to the finish line in that final furlong is my doubt, but he's a big enough price to take a chance. I think he's a bit of a freak on a going day, and I like that for a race like this.

Melbourne Cup - Athabascan 80/1

No study involved, just hoping lady luck lightning can strike twice.

Last year I ordered the field by RPRs and noted Knight's Choice well up the figures and at a triple-figure price so I chucked some each-way beer money at it.

Athabascan is actually top on RPRs and has the inside draw, He has middle-distance form so I'm hoping can hold a decent early position, after that it's in the lap of the gods but hey it worked for me last year so why the fvck not.

Here will be as good as anywhere for this one...

Trav Flemington 2.20 (our time) 40-1 (might find bigger if shopping around)

Up to about 10 days ago, connections were still hoping to get into the final big race Cup line-up. Ran in the same Group 2 as Onesmooth and Athabascan, needed a win there to get in and, ofc, it didn't happen.

Trainer seems to think that was a blessing in disguise, and, with Group 2 winning form (although over 400m further) on soft earlier this year and other respectable runs on deep ground, this is another Almanzor that can go well tonight at a price.

Balmoral Lady 1.25 Donny tomorrow 22/1
Won a listed race at Haydock earlier in the season and will appreciate the testing going.
Finished 2nd in this race last season and looks to have a decent each way chance at attractive odds.
