The Official Constitution Hill Thread 2025/26

When someone says Fitz I always think of Cracker.

"I drink too much, I smoke too much, I gamble too much. I am too much." So says criminal psychologist Eddie `Fitz' Fitzgerald.

What a programme it was.

Think it was the first time in ever saw Robert Carlyle in fantastic actor. And you say hell of a show. I should really go back and re watch it havent watched it since it was originally on telly.

The episodes with Robert Carlisle really stick in the memory, don’t they. Much as catchup tv is great I do sometimes miss looking forward to watching a programme when it’s on ( although I did record just about everything back then and have hundreds of videos to prove it; no Cracker though so I must have watched it when it was on). His long suffering wife is the actress that was in The Beiderbecke Affair, another great series which I have rewatched a couple of times since it was on.

Yes, just up the road from me, I'll be camping out overnight to make sure I get the best possible view of it all.

Never mind the fact I won't have a clue what weights any of them are carrying.

The Racing Post, already gearing for yet another "Arkle Showdown For The Ages," this time between Kopek Des Bordes and Lulamba (err, until one of them gets beat or injured), will be working themselves up into a rare frenzy for this.

Nice. What it hasn’t told us is if he’s learned to handle the new hurdles with their unforgiving “bar” tops. He always took chances enough with the old “brush” tops and although he was devastatingly quick over them he was always teetering on the edge of disaster. If he has learned he won’t be as quick over them, but still good enough to see the rest of them off. He’ll go through the season unbeaten then.

I admire your eternal optimism.

Tbh I've read and heard more rubbish about this horse than any other in all my years following this game.

To the knockers, wrong, he was never a "hype" horse.

Hype horses don't do what he did in the Supreme, they don't beat Jonbon the way he did, in the time he clocked.

And they don't beat a decent horse in State Man the way he did (in cold blood) in the Champion the following year.

I made Constitution Hill already as good as Istabraq at that point and poised to challenge Night Nurse and Monksfield.

But it all went pear shaped and that's what the other crew, the eternal optimists, can't accept.

All of the above and monster ratings don't mean "Jack" any more if a horse has an appalling gallop (Kempton), turns out to need a Wind Op, then ends up on the deck twice and annihilated at Punchestown (so unresolved issues clearly remain).

The romanticists love to remember those who came back - the Sprinter Sacres and the Kauto Stars (though neither were actually as great in their renaissance period as in their prime) - and conveniently forget the very many who didn't.

He's just breezed past a 119 horse in what was hardly a "race," it's utterly meaningless, plus he's not getting any younger.

You won't find out where's he's really at until the business end at Newcastle.

I’m with you, Ian.

He was an unbelievable novice and winner of a CH. But horses can lose it suddenly, either through injury, or anything else a human is never privy to. They just can’t tell you, can they?

I’d love him to get it back, to win another CH. I’m also sure that won’t happen. But my special memories are watching his debut at Sandown in December 2021, and THAT Supreme. You just shook your head in disbelief at that performance.

I know, I know. I ought to agree with you, but I can’t. Comparisons are always difficult (if not odious), but in his pomp Constitution Hill was the best I have seen. I simply can’t bring myself to desert him until he proves unequivocally that he’s gone. Falling was obviously a great shock to him if the the way he jumped the first hurdle next time as if it was The Chair at Aintree is anything to go by. So he has both mental and physical issues to overcome.
