The Will Win Thread

What's the opportunity cost of working?
A former friend of mine many years ago had that conversation with Monty Court, then Editor of The Sporting Life.

He walked into Court's office, handed in his resignation letter, and when asked why, said: "It's costing me money to work here - I could be winning more at the track even after expenses."

Court was bemused - most racing journalists cling onto their jobs like grim death and see it out all the way to the pension if they can.

Brilliant

"There was 200 yards added to the distance of the race at MR because of rail movements- that’s a furlong and made the difference."

I'm going to kick the next small child I see.

Slim- It happens at every Market Rasen meeting and has done so for a number of years now. As far as i remember, they alternate moving the bend turning away from the stands for one meeting and then move the rails on the bend turning for home at the next meeting.
I used to moan about it every meeting when i was on the old forum, i imagine the lads on there got sick of hearing it. There have been races where the added yardage has been over 300yds.
Why they cannot move the start to try and get the actual race distance closer to how it should be is beyond me.

But for anyone on here who is unaware of this, dont forget to check it out every time Market Rasen is on.

I wasn't t aware. Great knowledge.

I've just gone thru my old notes and the corresponding meeting last year was just as bad as todays meeting.
Apart from the first race last year which was "only" 174yds longer than advertised, the other five races were either 234yds longer or 276yds. And as i said earlier, i have seen a number of races that have been extended by over 300yds. And of course we are talking nearly a furlong and a half there.

My last say on this, it does wind me up. And i've banged on about it for years.

If you look at the Racing Post results section for Market Rasen today, you will see that at the top of the result they give the "advertised race distance" not the actual distance they raced. They do this for all the results. I have been in touch with them about it (a few years ago) but they havent changed anything and didnt even have the courtesy to reply and tell me to f*** off and mind my own business or whatever.
They used to have a little section at the bottom which would give the amended distances but i dont see it now.
What a useless publication the RP is. Of no use to me whatsoever.

My biggest takeaway from all of this is never getting you on a Twitter Spaces to have this rant out!

The form book always states the extra yardage of each race, where applicable.

It does mate but just clicking on the RP results or clicking on the form (which is what the majority of punters will do) will only show the advertised race distance.
I only ever check results on the BHA site if i need to know something.

Haha.
I didnt even know what Twitter Spaces were. I had to Google it. I'm not one for (Un)social media these days and steer clear of them all. I'm just a miserable old git now who more or less keeps himself to himself where racing is concerned.
And my ranting days are more or less gone. I lost count of the number of rants i had on Letsbet but there were plenty. And then some more.

Happy days.
