It is, of course, literally impossible to back the winner of this marathon 4m1f110yds Handicap Chase at Gosforth Park on Saturday, 21st February without knowing the following....

The contest is named after the Eider duck.

The name stems from a wildlife theme used for naming early races at Newcastle racecourse, which is located at the aforementioned Gosforth Park.

The common Eider (Somateria mollissima) is a large sea-duck that is frequently seen in the area around the racecourse.

The Eider duck is known for its distinctive black and white plumage, which aligns with the black and white colours of Newcastle United Football Club.

There is absolutely no need to thank Your Favourite Uncle Smart Arse for this - he's all about educating the great unwashed by spending a few seconds cutting and pasting off Google AI.

There are 35 in the race and the five-day confirmations will be a week tomorrow.

If the horse I choose has Brian Hughes onboard then I might think of changing my mind
He doesn't seem to have much luck in this race.....11 attempts, 0 wins, 2 places

The crucial horse in the decs must be Mr Vango. If he stays in, most of these decs will be out of the handicap. We must hope he goes for the National Trial at Haydock instead.

Why "must we hope" that?

Half the forum might be on him for this at the 16/1 with Bet365.

Though tbf if so, that'll be the half who have losing accounts with Bet365 so can still get a bet on with the Stoke-On-Trent shower.

Well, in my opinion mate, the race itself looks far more competitive with a top weight of 137 and many more horses in the handicap.

But I'll rephrase:

I must hope that he goes for the national trial at Haydock instead.
