I find I am spending more of my time listening to Podcasts and reading rather than live radio or TV. I think this might be a sign of flight from the real world horrors that come at you thick and fast from live news.

My stable tour is below. I'd welcome any suggestions that might be added. Numbers indicate my top 5 preferences.

I must try listening to that last one...

I struggle with podcasts. I need to close my eyes to concentrate and then just fall asleep.
 
I find them great for long drives, walks and gym visits. I put on a shite one when I'm going to bed as it helps me sleep and I won't care if I miss it.

I don't (probably can't) do long drives any more, don't go long walks unaccompanied and haven't been to the gym since covid so no real context for me to want to listen to one.
 
I’ve just discovered History Extra. Not quite as heavy as In Our Time ( which sometimes feels like I’m wading through treacle) but obviously more serious than You’re Dead to Me( which I love) or The Rest is History. I’ve got a huge back catalogue to wade through. I discovered it when I was trying to find out more about the downfall of Thomas Cromwell.
Backlisted, in which people just discuss old books. The one about The Dark is Rising is particularly good and features Robert Macfarlane.
Folk on Foot, in which folk musicians go on a walk round a place that influences them, chat and play music on the way. Once a month they go through the folk chart and I’ve discovered some great new folk groups ( I like most music apart from jazz but always return to folk).There was one featuring Sandra Kerr ( who did the music for Bagpuss and is Nancy Kerrs mother) walked along the river at Warkworth, which is one of my favourite walks, too. And the best one ever which featured Johnny Flynn with Robert Macfarlane.
The Rest is Politics, but I must admit to being in such despair about the rise of populism that, for the first time in my adult life I’m avoiding current affairs and politics as I feel so helpless.
Natural Histories. A short half hour podcast that discusses all things about nature. I discovered, in an episode about Yew trees, that my local very run down country park, has a world famous topiary. The man who worked it developed a technique for moving large trees and should be far more famous than he is. Capability Brown refused to landscape it as it was too flat to work on but gave them a few trees, I believe.
Jon Ronsons Things Fell Apart, described as ‘unexpected human stories from the culture wars’. A bit heavy, this one, but fascinating.
Hypnogoria: featuring all things horror but also touches on children’s fantasy literature such as The Box of Delights and The Dark is Rising, because there is a crossover. I discovered it when I found out that it’s presenter, Jim Moon was a member of the Box of Delights Scrobblefest Facebook page.
I can’t imagine a life without podcasts which, along with William Hill Racing radio ( when racing resumed) got me through the pandemic. Alas, it seems to have stopped me reading books as I now prefer listening to things. I intend to subscribe to Audible which, unfortunately features even more podcasts including my guilty pleasure, My Teenage Diaries which I can only access via Audible

My partner will love those. He’s an expert on great footballers from the past who are largely unknown these days. He got chatting to a young lad on a charity walk recently whose granddad played for Forest and told him how absolutely brilliant his grandad was and how he can still remember seeing him play.

Thank you, Moe. I’ve included three Forest players: Anderson, Francis and McGovern. John Robertson is being saved for Super Squad 2.

How can I get the book? Haven’t got time to listen to the podcast and won’t mention it to Mike if there’s a Christmas present I can get for him. He’s a nightmare to buy presents for.

Would listen to Desert Island Discs every week -love the 70's archive.The most interesting episode was definitely Thatcher -she was incredibly intelligent but a humourless Puritan -would be unelectable today.

Forest had a squad of amazing players over a 3-4 year period. It was difficult leaving out the players I had to, just so that I could squeeze my own squad of 23 players into a book. I also had a loose rule of no more than three players per team.
 
I thought Cloughie liked his players to play clean. Isn’t that why he hated managing Leeds ( apologies to Leeds supporters!)? One of our patients used to tell me stories about Cloughie. He used to drive for him I think. Annoyingly I can’t remember anything he told me. It was a long time ago.That other Derby manager was good at spotting good players. Can’t remember his name. He signed up Wanchope (sp). I was a full on Rams fan back then.When Forest were playing away Mike used to drive over to the Baseball Ground to watch Derby. I don’t know if it’s just old age but neither of us are as interested in football as we used to be. Got a message from Mike to say he thinks Kenny lives just a few miles from us.

Please buy the book! Honestly, it’s a good read ☺️. If football is your thing; or, even for somebody else who is interested in football from the olden days.

The book is self-published, so, to a large extent, I’m doing my own marketing.
 
I’ll spread the word but it will have to be after Mike has had his copy from Santa!
