Tingle creeks of the past

Tingle Creek exemplified why the Jumps season should never solely revolve around the Cheltenham Festival.

He detested the place - but at his beloved Sandown Park he was the best 2m chaser around in his day.

Camera angles gave a much better view of the race back then especially the view of them coming to the Pond fence.

My favorite still remains Sprinter Sacre’s win in the 2012 running - not only was it an insane performance against who turned up, Nicholls had been giving it all the mouth all season saying Sanctuaire was going to win easily and they were going to break SS’s heart. Watching Sprinter saunter past and effectively stick two hooves up without even breaking stride was priceless.

If Moscow Flyer and Sprinter Sacre had jumped the pond fence together watching them side by side there was nothing in it at the line...with one big difference Sprinter never came out of second gear. No doubt the best horse ever to win a Tingle Creek

Thanks for letting us know.

But Sprinter never came out of second gear because the opposition was way below the standard Moscow Flyer faced.

When the 2 mile chaser discussions break out with everyone comparing Moscow who's a personal favourite of mine and admittedly Sprinter sacre was a marvellous 2 miler but very few people ever mention the one in between the pair in Master minded who to my mind won 2 tingle creeks even if one was run at Cheltenham but not only that his 1st QM chase was the biggest 2 mile performance I've ever seen.

Sizing Europe put him in his place.

I maybe never explained it as well as I should have. Both horses kicked for home just after the pond fence both took approx 41 seconds to get to the winning post. Moscow Flyer was absolutely flat to the boards while Sprinter was only cantering...Surely had he been pushed out by Barry he would have got there much sooner than Moscow Flyer did.

It looked better than it actually was. Take a close look at Voy Por Ustedes 2 mile form. He won the worst Arkle you could ever hope to see and little else at 2 miles...different horse entirely at 2m4f. His lack of ability at 2m made Master Minded look fantastic but as good as he was he never reached that same Arkle like performance again that we expected. His 2nd QMCC was very good but again the opposition wasn't brilliant.

Seriously? Sizing Europe was another top class horse but you saying that would be on par with me saying Dodging bullets put Sizing Europe in his place. Behave.

That performance in 2008 for me that day he'd of beat any of the great 2 milers at their peak. I'm not saying he'd of murdered the like of Moscow and Sprinter but that day for me he'd of edged it an absolute standout performance.

Thoroughly enjoyed this article on Moscow flyer's tingle creek.

My sole visit to a Sandown NH meeting happened to be that memorable day. I was in London for an extended-family reunion and managed to excuse myself from the forced jollities for an altogether more relaxing afternoon in Esher. The train from Waterloo was abuzz with anticipation.

It was a grey, gloomy, still day: my favourite winter weather, made so bright by that Tingle Creek renewal. The atmosphere amongst the throng attempting to dash back to the winners enclosure to see the 'big three' in was a joy to behold and to be a part of.

Ruby always maintained Kauto was the best 2 miler he rode, citing that Tingle Creek win.
Flyingbolt ,before most of our time was monstrous also, given the weights he carried.
Johnny Francome rates Crisp a truly exceptional horse, who if kept at 2 miles would not have been beaten.
Desert Orchid, Pearlyman , Remittance Man, the list goes on.
Nowadays the 2 mile programme is light years ahead of what was there 20 years ago, let alone 50 years ago.
One thing for sure, the Tingle Creek is a great race named after a great, great horse.
Channel 4 racing used show a Benson and Hedges Chase where Tingle Creek was just beaten by Pendil, they went at it hammer and tongs from the Pond Fence home.

Sizing Europe won 8 Grade 1's and a Greatwood Hurdle despite having an owner who wanted to make him into a Gold Cup.He won a Good Irish Champion Hurdle by 30 lengths.Master Minded not fit to lace his boots.
