He had his knockers and critics back then aswell. Felt like people laying him for the Champion Hurdle we're almost pleased he hurt his back when about to win it that year.Sizing Europe won 8 Grade 1's and a Greatwood Hurdle despite having an owner who wanted to make him into a Gold Cup.He won a Good Irish Champion Hurdle by 30 lengths.Master Minded not fit to lace his boots.
I have taken a major interest in Edwardstone over the last 14 months due to a friend of mine having a big each way bet on him for Champion Chase at 33/1.On nearly every occasion they have ridden him with kid gloves and seem afraid to show him the whip or let him get involved in a battle. At the festival he was a very weak finisher.I'm not a fan of attributing overall ability on the basis one performance so a Tingle Creek winner shouldn't be acclaimed the best 2-miler. Race circumstances can lead to false ratings.
I mentioned elsewhere that I backed Edwardstone today and that's because of his win in this race two years ago. He beat Greaneteen (OR 171), Shishkin (176) and Gentleman de Mee (163) 9 lengths, 15 lengths and over 16 lengths respectively.
On literal terms, that makes Edwardstone either a 181, 193 or 181 horse respectively. It's possible that performance hurt him mentally but he's still up to running to a decent level.
I would never claim Edwardstone to be one of the all time greats that those ratings would imply but some other TC (or Champion Chase) performances could also be open to misleading conclusions about winners' ability.
Purely personal opinion -I just get the impression they afraid to give the horse a crack of the whip.Cheers, Luke, for the insight.
Maybe last season's Game Spirit fell into his lap but the bare calcs still put him close to 180. He was nine clear and cruising away from Boothill (158) and ended up 40 lengths clear of Funambule Sivola (145). Amarillo Sky tried to go with him and had been run to standstill by the Pond Fence but he did finish lame.
Edwardstone was also only a short-head off El Fabiolo (175) in the Celebration Chase. That kind of form should see him good enough to be second to Jonbon today.
Absolute legend of a horse.Lovely to see my old friend Viking Flagship winning his Tingle Creek on ITV just now. The way he picked up again when Travado looked like he might go by was just fantastic to see
Must admit I was totally surprised when Viking Flagship won his QMCC I never gave him a chance,,,,I honestly dont remember him beating the same horses in the Tingle Creek which I just watched on Youtube
Horses can that to a person; the only sure way to end up with a small fortune from racehorses is to start with a big fortune. The Flagship family were bred locally -the father of the breeder was a very successful businessman who lost millions on the horses.
