    Dublin

€200 seems to be the going rate in the city centre and environs for a room on a Saturday night, whether it’s a single, twin or double. In this price range the Mespil, Gibson and Sandymount Hotels would be reasonable choices. By the way there’s a meeting in Leopardstown that Sunday. Easy enough...

Horses you never forgave and couldn’t like

There have indeed been moderate winners of the two races but only one horse has ever won both. To expect a horse to not only win both races but be in the highest echelon at both disciplines is unreasonable. The demands of the two races are different. One is about speed and accuracy over the...

Horses you never forgave and couldn’t like

DO and Ian, read that last sentence of Jinny’s post and from now on repeat it any time you fear you are about to have what used to be called ‘impure thoughts’ about Ms Welch.

    Aintree (other races)

My feeling was that after conceding first run to Lossie and needing to extricate himself from a pocket, that Constitution Hill might not have won. He certainly wasn't going to piss it. Well done to DO and Ian by the way for their good tipping today.

    Talking Horses Ante-Post Competition 2024 / 2025 February selections

Thanks to efficient action by last year’s winner Anadin, the Alan Morgan Trophy has arrived safely with me today and now has pride of place on my mantelpiece. Believe me, it is a very nice piece. It would have arrived sooner but for an attempted act of piracy by the Irish customs service but...

    Tom Queally

Frankel was a brilliant talent but he was hard to train. Henry Cecil was helped by the fact Frankel never had to spend a night away from his own stable and it was only at the end of his career that he was asked to stretch to 10f. The largely forgotten Sea The Stars had a more demanding career...

    Is French form under-rated?

You have me confused now. This thread started as a discussion about whether RPRs underestimated French form and I was highlighting an example of it from earlier today. I certainly wasn't impugning French ORs, quite the opposite.

    Is French form under-rated?

Maybe, but surely the point is they're even more meaningless on .French racing

    Is French form under-rated?

The Mullins fav in today's opener at Limerick has an official rating of 136 based on her form in France, which is a stone superior to either of her rivals. But her highest RPR is only 116 and on adjusted RPRs she is 7lbs below Mongibello.

    Some Stats

Thanks for sharing this. I'd like to be sure I'm understanding the data correctly, so please forgive my questions. The left hand tables show the overall results of betting at level stakes on the highest rated horse in various types of races in the three countries? And what exactly are the...

What would you do to the Cheltenham Festival's racing programme ?

I fully support the expanded programme for fillies and mares. The syndicate I’m part of would scarcely exist without it. But the Mares Hurdle is taking too many viable runners out of the Champion Hurdle. Stage a Grade 2 mares hurdle at the festival and a Grade 1 race at Sandown.
