    Songs you'd forgot about.

This topic drove me to checking out my old 45s and I have a (short) list. Known to most: I Can't Let Go - Hollies Ohio - CSNY It's Different For Girls - Joe Jackson Maybe less well-known: Listen To The Radio (Atmospherics) - Tom Robinson The Great Banana Hoax - Electric Prunes Say You Don't...

    Guitarists

I'm not a huge fan of feedback or amps turned up to 11 but 2 memorable concerts from the early 70s were Deep Purple at the Albert Hall and Mountain at the Rainbow, Finsbury Park. Ritchie Blackmore and Leslie West in fine form but my hearing was affected for hours afterwards! Personal favourites...

    The 2025 Grand National

The thing about Mallow is that it's fairly wet so this race is usually run on soft or worse ground. As with any marathon handicap, that sort of ground will favour the lower weights who will probably find it difficult to achieve a mark that will get in at Aintree. Captain Kangaroo was rated 120...

    The Pantheon?

It's for peak RPR in the last 37 years apparently. I've said elsewhere that Galopin Des Champs is, in my opinion, the best Gold Cup winner this century and the earlier one that I'd go back to would be Burrough Hill Lad. As also said elsewhere, at somewhere like Kempton I'm not sure that he...

    The 2025 Grand National

Agreed. As I said, the modern orthodoxy goes against 2 marathon races in a short space of time. Also, the qualification restrictions for Aintree make the Eider less viable, particularly as the Aintree mark is already set. I'm fairly sure that the race used to be a genuine National trial.

    The 2025 Grand National

The Eider Chase at Newcastle used to be seen as a National trial with Comply or Die winning both races. It's run after weights for Aintree have been allocated but I'd say that today's fashion would be that, with only a 6 or 7 week gap, it's a little too close to the big one.

    The 2025 Grand National

When we won the Cork race in 2022 with Captain Kangaroo, it definitely gave Willie ideas about Aintree.

Trainers being paid for on course interviews

To be fair, I think that the idea was for any payments to go to a central fund to be split around all trainers in much the same way that there's a central fund for jockeys. Listening to Kim Bailey this morning, he didn't support the idea but said there was widespread frustration that racecourses...

    The 2025 Grand National

Willie definitely likes the Bobbyjo for his National horses. 22 February rhis year and well worth a look at his entries for the race, especially given that it's just after the GN weights are announced..

Horses you never forgave and couldn’t like

I still think that the comparison to GDC is valid because the latter's only 'out' performances have been at Punchestown with two of those over an inadequate trip first time out and the other two when probably not over the Gold Cup. Wayward Lad, sadly, did not quite get the Gold Cup trip at that...

    Breeding and Bloodstock Sales

The owner of The Great Nudie, Leo McArdle, gave this interview after she won at Tramore a couple of months ago. Seems like a decent man with a decent philosophy. https://www.racingtv.com/watch/on-demand/interviews/613530

Horses you never forgave and couldn’t like

Does that mean that you'd diss Desert Orchid? Clearly, nothing like as good at Cheltenham than, say, Kempton. Arguably you could say the same about Kauto Star. Hopefully this won't hex Galopin at the weekend but, at Leopardstown and Cheltenham, I'd have him ahead of most this century.

Road to the 2025 Champion Hurdle

It's 4 years since Beacon Edge ran at 2 miles. The form, quite literally, means nothing in terms of Cheltenham. Anzadam is possibly very good but I share the opinion that he won't go to Cheltenham unless something happens to State Man. Possibly worth a bet nrnb but, without that safety net...

    The Two Mile Chasers

I've never really taken to Jonbon but I do concede that he's a solid favourite. I think that there's evidence that he's several pounds worse at Cheltenham than at, say, Sandown or Ascot and it's no coincidence that he's never recorded a 170 RPR at the track. There is, of course, every chance...
