2-y-os 2017

A winner at last for DAWN APPROACH as Haddaf takes the last at Newcastle at the rewarding odds of 2/5!

Today's:

Curragh 1.45

RED JAZZ - Burgundy Boy Sheila Lavery 25/1
LETHAL FORCE - Would Be King Ger Lyons 9/4

On a slightly different matter, I was watching the ATR coverage of Newcastle on Friday evening and one of the pundits (can't remember who it was) mentioned Hugo Palmer's excellent record when sent to race on Newcastle's "all-weather", as is my won't I had a look at the figures yesterday morning. And for once it wasn't a truism!

Hugo Palmer two and three-year-olds on the Newcastle A.W.

Runs 26 Wins 10 38.3% %return 171.7

Was going to post this yesterday but for some reason didn't get round to it and LO! and BEHOLD he goes and wins the Group 3 Chipchase with the 3-y-o Koropick @ 8/1, his only runner there.

Sorry about the after-timing but I didn't back it so I don't think that counts.

Godolphin have a very smart Dawn Approach but it's still a bit weak. I suspect he will be like Nathaniel last year in that his progeny need time and the better ones will be out backend of the year. Then do better next season as 3yos.

The Pentagon was a very easy winner at the Curragh yesterday winning by over eight lengths, he was supported from 6/1 into an SP of 9/2, with his stablemate Bond Street an uneasy favourite back in third. In his only previous outing The Pentagon (10/1) finished sixth beaten 19 lengths by Verbal Dexterity. Improvement from first to second run is to be expected but it seems to me that this yard has an an exceptional number of runners that make exceptional improvement after their first outing.

I had a look at the numbers.

Aidan O'Brien's 2-y-o in Ireland 2017.

First time out runners - 32 winners -2 6.2% %age return 39.1
Second run 21-9-42.9%- 102.1%

Is this situation acceptable?
Should Irish racing do something about it?
