2025 Melbourne Cup - Race Prediction, Tips, Picks, & Expert Thoughts on Which Horse Will Win On The Day

Norton bit also called a Citation Bit, named after American Triple Crown winner 1948.
It is for hard pulling horses to help them settle.
Lugging bit is help prevent horses hanging off a straight line.
Cross nose bands are to help settle hard pullers.
(Grackle was 1931 Grand National winner so history everywhere)
A standard snaffle bit is your standard bit , no bells or whistles.
Extra leverage to the rider is given by the bells and whistles ; when Joseph O'Brien was riding the APOB juveniles they had all the headgear attached; the poor jockey trying to control aboard a six ounce saddle ; no easy task.
When Ryan took the job all the headgear was put in cold storage.

Having been to Breeders Cup 1992 with racing buddies we planned to attend Melbourne Cup in 1993.
We did the Arc instead thus missing Vintage Crop's success.
I got there in 1998 and must say it is a flat race event to rival Cheltenham Festival.
The Monday parade through the city, the racecards selling at every street corner has to seen to be believed.
WPM told Lar Byrne that any serious racehorse owner should have it on their bucket list.
At 300k to race one there you would need to own Dunnes Stores or similar.
Just a pity Waltzing Matilda has been replaced with Advance Australia Fair; sheep stealing has been the lifeblood of the Australian way of life.
Someone told of David Elsworth's questioning by customs/immigration one of the Persian Punch years.
"Sir, have you a criminal record ?"
" Didn't realise I still needed one !"

I remember being in Sydney in 2000, during the day of the MC. I remember watching a kids tv programme with my very young neice and nephew, and marvelled at the conversation between a blue bear and a green lion. They were exchanging info on who would win the MC.

“The race that stops a nation”.

For the flatties. Does Absurde actually have a chance? Is he well handicapped?

I watched his run either last year or before, and weaved through the lot before finishing third i think.

I think he has a chance.same jockey as last year.ran on in the caulfield Cup last time.
Good draw and trained by a breeders cup winning trainer.
What more could you ask for.

Plenty of rain there reportedly, several suggestions around that it'll at least be bordering heavy, possibly proper heavy.

That throws in lots more question marks. Doesn't need to be said, ofc, but it'll need even more of a proper stayer (assuming they don't dawdle).

Absurde does look like he'll handle it.

After the weekend events you couldn't rule out Absurde, but as Chaumi states the forecast rain is a worry. I'll be fucked if I'm getting up at 3.45 to see what the goings. Iike.
I think Further will run well here + that's where my coins are going.

First race is at 11.45 our time tonight. Don't think it'll be necessary given the seeming confidence of reports, but anyone wanting to see ground for their own eyes can (very likely) watch it on the free channel(s) above.

Absurde did actually win a County Hurdle on pretty bad ground

I had a look to see if any of the runners tomorrow have come from the last renewal of any uk/ire/fr/hk races and this is what my db spat out.
Doesn't look like runners who ran in the Melbourne Cup the prev year fare well.

Thus far I’ve backed Valiant King, Onesmoothoperator( because I’d hate not to be cheering him on at the finish if he was going well) Chevalier Rose ( no hoper but drawn 5 which is a good draw and had been a good horse at one time) and Royal Supremacy ( probably won’t stay). I have a Willie Mullins problem as I dislike anyone dominating a sport and, even though years ago I did well from backing any horse he ran abroad eg Sesenta I now can’t bring myself to back them which is stupid of me but I can’t help it.
