with some friends i have booked a flight to stanstedt at the beginning of september. some of the girls of the group dont like to go to london so we have decided to stay outside of it and spend the 3 days visiting other parts of the country.
so far only cambridge (because its near the airport as the first place to go) is on our plan.
we would be glad for suggestions what else to visit in the central to southern area.
any tips?

wassermusik please read the thread about mail error above !

If you are staying near essex and suffolk how about Bury St Edmunds and then a day at the sea at Aldeburgh

I would suggest Newmarket since its only 15 mins from Cambridge (so long as your companions are like minded!) - while you are there take in the National Horse Racing Museum - you will not be disappointed - it is excellent. Also the National Stud run tours so you can visit the stallions there. There are also various tours which show you the horses on the gallops and a tour around a trainers stables.

Apart from the horse racing side - there is a lovely town in Suffolk called Lavenham which is very beautiful timber-housed town (best in country) - also Sudbury is close by which houses museum to Gainsborough if you like art.

Try putting East Anglia in Google and see what it comes up with!

Cambridge is lovely, and as jinny says it would be a crying shame to be so close to Newmarket and not visit.

thanks very much so far.
derek, in fact i am living only about 50 kilometeres away of the Weissensee and a regular visitor especially for endless skating in winter, perfect.

but now england we are coming.
i would love newmarket, but my friends are all non-horsey people. so i may steal myself away for some hours and go there on my own.
Ardross and Jinnyj, i must still check the map, but i dont know if this part is enough entertaining for the teenagers among us. perhaps we will head west towards wales/cornwall (as if there are not enough castles at home
:)

Teenagers might find Lavenham rather dull . Aldeburgh perhaps less so and Bury St Edmunds is quite a big town .

Ardross, i just studied the Aldeburgh website on the internet and i must say: it seems not the sexiest place to be (you know, we travel two thousand miles......)

What are the interests of the group, Wasser?
unfortunately its exactly what london would have to offer:
shopping (clothes, antiques,)
theatre (old vic), musicals and galleries
markets (portobello road)
entertainment. :D

we shall have 3 full days with thursday going to cambridge. friday and saturday yet to plan.

dublin, yes, that really could be an alternative Btb. i checked ryanair and they are offering it for 60 euro. but please dont tell geraoid, that schoolgirls are in the group!
