3 Days In England?

The big drawback is going to be travel if you've only got 3 days otherwise I would suggest Bath which has great shops, antique markets, restaurants etc but its about 2.5 hours from Cambridge. You could try Oxford - shopping is ok and the colleges are beautiful but its really pretty much the same as Cambridge in that sense.

Had you ventured to London, I would have suggested Camden Market as it would appeal more to teenagers and theres plenty of it.

Then Bath's your best bet - it's small enough that you can see most of the sights in a day, it's got decent shopping for the teenagers and their mothers and if you time it right, you can go racing, Wasser!

And you can also have the pleasure of calling into the Porter Pub across from the top of Milsom Street (main drag) and being served by my son and heir!! It's not a smart pub - and I do hold it against my son that he's working in a vegetarian pub ( :angy: ) - but it's in a great location, just above the very famous Hole In The Wall restaurant.

Hope you have a fun few days!

we enjoy travelling, so 2,5 hours or more are no problem.
its down to Dublin, Bath or Bristol now.
Bristols for me. I will gladly travel for 2.5 hours or more for a decent Bristol (or two). ;)

I find it hard to understand what tourists see in Dublin. I would much prefer to fly into Knock Airport and do a bit of touring in the West of Ireland.

Last time I holiday'd in the UK was all of fifteen years ago. And there has been nothing ever since to compare with that holiday! I stayed in the Kent area and would heartily recommend it.

In the heart of rural Kent there are these extraordinary picture-poscard villages straight from the lid of a biscuit tin. Fabulous old pubs extant from the 1500's, history oozing from every nook and cranny. Great food and Shepherd Neame ale, lovely coastal towns (the cinque ports), and Darling Buds of May farms around each bend in the road.

Maybe modernisation has changed things in the intervening years, I don't know, but I loved it back then and the place would be my number 1 destination if I were to holiday in England again.

thank you again for all the ideas and good help.
we are back and have agreed that this was a most pleasant trip.

first cambridge like out of a picture book, picknick at jesus green, dining italian style in the La margherita (very recommended). stranded at 11 pm - where do you go when the night really starts?

then newmarket: too little time to explore all, but i could convince my friends to spend two hours at the races on friday and make a trip to town. All the expenses and more were covered by the brave Empangeni at 10/1 in the last race.

3rd day following Ardross´ tip we travelled to Orford/Alderburgh. Great Castle, exciting coast, took a few stones with me. again picknick, at the very windy quay, endless fun all day. (although we missed the fish an chips, again due to - for us - strange closing times,).

so we missed a lot you suggested here, but it was a great journey and i am very thankful to all.

Next time you come to England, Wasser, try to come to Brighton and I will be able to provide you with EVERYTHING your group wants within five minutes of my apartment! It will be my pleasure to take you all to one of our many excellent fish restaurants (although, of course, you can get meat or vegetarian food, too). Racing for you (though you need to consult with me on the dates), antiques, the crazy Pavilion built by one of our many crazy princes, shops, food and drink al fresco by the sea, curiosities, Saturday open market, fabulous countryside for walking, country pubs, and then plenty of night clubs, late night bars, and casinos. I might not be able to keep up with your group for three days, but I guarantee you'll all find something that each of you will like!

Unfortunately Wasser - most of England (bar the few clubs & stuff in the city centres, generally) shuts down at 11pm. There are a load of changes to the licensing laws coming in but in general, around 85% of places (at least) in a town/city centre will close at 11pm. There are more in the larger cities but in general there are few places open after hours.

Not like on the continent - here most places don't open until later on & they don't get going until after 11pm. Many a time I've got back in & been amazed at the time - one day last week I thought I was bailing out early & realised when I walked into my flat it was nearly 4am!
