Advice Please - Laptops

Have today bought a couple of Toshs for the company - one model has the Centrino processor which gives a better battery life - about 5 hours tops. They're sturdy and look fine.

oh right I dont like that twat club I am a member but cant get it back I suppose you can ????? :o :D I am sure my daughter in law as the CENTRINO its heavier than the other one owing to the bigger heavier battery ???
but as stated I was impressed................. :)

Dom, I bought a 17" screen Toshiba P30 last January, and it has been superb since day one. I bought mine for £850 brand new on E-bay when the lowest I could find it for at the time was £1150. I'd look at what you can afford from the Toshiba range as they are one of the oldest and best producers of laptops. Don't buy a Dell whatever you do. B)
:shy: :shy: :shy:

Gone & bought a Dell, Dave..... :shy:

I reckon I got a good deal with a good spec for what I need & a very techie colleague of mine advised to buy Dell - I wasn't going to but found a good deal. Got a Pentium processor, 1.73gHz, 40Gb, 512MB Ram & Centrino so reckon it'll do me.

Cheers fir the advice everyone!

Well, I did try to get hold of one gratis, but wasn't very successful....

I reckon if I'd have waited I may have been able to wangle one though!!

So how much did this one cost?

I've been told Moette "requires" a laptop while she's in halls of residence and "would like" one for Christmas ( :o there goes Leopardstown in Feb  )

They're not allowed to download music or video in the halls but she needs a good laptop for wordprocessing, the internet and playing her DVDs.

Any recommendations?

My Dell is a grand little machine Mo, the specs are above and it has Centrino wireless technology. It is pretty fast & it is a compact, nice looking machine. It wasn't expensive either but I did pick it up via a special offer Dell had, giving 10% off. Personally I preferred a model with a decent processor (Pentium rather than the cheaper Celeron) as it makes the machine so much faster.

Maurice,

I went through the same thing last year.

I ended up with an IBM Thinkpad c£1200. I was looking for a good keyboard.

Word of warning, they have been bought out by someone or other and I don't know if this has had a detrimental effect.

Maurice.
€1599 a while ago now.The price will have dropped a good bit.

If you look on the Net,you will see that you can purchase a VIAO from around £700 lowish spec.

Wireless Technology is must for me and a fast Hard Drive + Intel.

On my travels,i am always suprised at the number of unsecured WLANs,just flick a switch and, with a bit of luck, you can be on the net for free.

I loved my Toshiba laptop as stated but they are about a grand. Dell are very good from what I hear.

Now you've lost me, rumours.

I went into the Which? site and they seem to be saying Dell is the best (ignoring Apple, which is no good to us). My local AV shop also recommended Dell, yet I'm sure I was told (apart from on here) to avoid Dell.

For about £500, it seems I can get a decent spec, including a colour printer. The chap in the local AV shop says Dell printers are rebadged Lexmarks. Can anyone confirm?

We can get Office via work licences but I don't know if we can extend that to Moette's laptop, although we know PC World do special prices for students (about £90).

The IT chap at work also said to go for a re-furb rather than brand new. Any opinions?

Mo, I think you can extend the licence for up to 3 people so that would cover Moette.

Nothing wrong with Dell, good machines, great prices, only problem if anything goes wrong you got to send it back, no laptop for a week or so.
