Anyone been to ..........

I've been to San Francisco and Seattle. I don't have much to say about the latter, it was only a short visit and it rained all the time. I liked San Fran though.

San Fran and Chicago

San Fran is very relaxed and smaller than you may think. Most of the sights are worthwhile although fishermans wharf is a bit tacky and I couldn't get excited about queuing for Alcatraz. The bars and food are good and if you like art, the modern art museum is a gem.
It's good just walking the streets there and taking in a unique city

Loved Chicago. Very underrated. The architecture institute runs superb free tours for a start but again it's a good city to wander round

My take on Seattle from friends is its a bit like Vancouver. Very pleasant but not necessarily much to take in. Had a fling with a bird from Sd but never went there. Not really heard anyone say anything special about the place

Been to all except San Diego. Happy to give thoughts but holiday, work, live etc.? Wiil then offer appropriate comments.

San Francisco definitely worth a visit. Really taken by something about that place.

San Diego is good craic but not a whole lot to see or do really.

The thing to do is start in San Francisco and work your way down the coast until LA, head inland to the Grand Canyon (most impressive place I have ever been), and continue on to Las Vegas via the Hoover Dam. Alternatively, head for San Diego and try your luck in Tijuana.

San Diego yes and also Tijuana but about 20 years ago. I seriously warn against going to Tijuana now though. It is a very very dangerous place as is alot of Mexico sadly. If you get to San Diego and its summer make sure you go to Del Mar racetrack.

Parts of LA are great (I worked there for 2 years) but alot had changed when I went back 3 years ago. The traffic for one was hideous.

Would love to go to San Francisco though and work my way down. Heaps of other places in the US I'd love to go too.

San Fran is great, and if you want a quieter time the coast north of it just as beautiful as Big Sur etc., just without the crowds.

If you like wine the Napa, Sonoma and Russian River valleys are worth a few days touring around and stopping at vineyards.

Couple of things that might surprise granger

Chicago can be very very hot in June. San Francisco is rarely hot at any time of year. A strange micro climate there

If watching sport in chicago there you have to go to wrigley field. I didn't but wished I had

Been to SF and loved it, also Seattle and enjoyed that, too, although then husband didn't enjoy it much. He spent four weeks in Chicago four years ago and loved it.

I didn't rate LA much, tbh - too sprawling.

Spent a fantastic holiday going from Denver to Jackson Hole and then up into Idaho - if you're going from Chicago to SF (or vice versa) by car, it should be a fantastic journey!

yep - just $23 for a ticket. A stadium with some character.

Only been to San Francisco from that lot, but would follow-up the already hearty recommendations, with another of my own.

It's somewhat unique as US cities go, and has already been said, has a very relaxed feel about it. I'm not sure if Clivex actually bothered with the trip to Alcatraz, but it is very-much worth it. There is an excellent audio tour, and just pottering around the island and taking in the layout of the place, will greatly enhance any viewing of the movie The Rock. :D

If you are hiring a car, you must do the 49-mile drive; a sign-posted tour of the city which takes in The Presidio, a brief part of the California high-way, Golden Gate Park, and Twin Peaks - the last of which gives great views across the city out towards Candlestick Point and Oakland - before meandering back through the South of the City.

Being less cultured (but better-looking) than Clivex, I only made it as far as the gardens at the Modern Art Museum, but they're worth a visit themselves, and I'm sure the Cultural Abassador of Richmond is right when he says the museum merits a stop on your itinerary.

And if you can make the time, an afternoon wandering around Sausilito over the bay, is time well spent.

Granger, as you appear to be heading West to East, I would beseech you to take in the following if you can manage it:

Grand Canyon: as Tracks said, a seriously awe-inspiring place.

Yosemite Valley: as beautiful a spot as you will find anywhere. If you're travelling in June, the meltwater will still be high, and the waterfalls should be in full-pelt. Just breath-taking.

Vegas. For all of its fabulous, gaudy, grubiness. :D

There's quite a lot of bugger-all between these places and the Windy City, and a handful of days spent ensuring you take the time to enjoy them, is something you will not regret. Indeed, I would compel you to make time to visit them - even if it is at the expense of a few more days in each of SF or Chicago.

As the Lady is a tramp says "hates California,so cold and so damp " as is Seattle and the Pacific North West. Worked in most of them and must say despite this , I enjoy the US. Not been to Las Vegas yet though. Love Chicago and was lucky enough to see the old meatyards. Odd I know.Have a neice who settled in Seattle only last month. From her garden she looks down at a nest of a sea eagle. She noticed there were alot of unexplained objects in there which on closer inspection turned out to be little kittys and doggies collars complete with bells.Got to see the sea otters cracking oyster shells on their bellies while lying on their backs in the sea. Best sight of all used to be The battleship Missouri in the naval dockyards at San Diego, sadly no more. Still loads to enjoy old boy, and those cocktails when the day is done are to die for

Fcking cheek. You are Scottish grass so it's impossible for you to be better looking than me.
