I know this isn't my usual subject which is why I would appreciate any informed advice . We have a mature Apple Blossom tree in our garden . We're having to cut it back because the neighbours satelite signal :D but aside from that we have an extremely officious neighbour who thinks that our roots are gonna afect his mortgage offer . He lives at least 20mtrs from the tree. If anyone knows about this it's appreciated. I just want to know thw facts .

Your neighbour is an arse. Get some professional advice and sicken the b@stard. Apple blossom and cherry blossom trees are clear evidence of the beauty of nature. Go after the sh*t!

Well I agree with the neighbour being an arse . He saw my new car and knows I have my test in a week or two. Do you know he actually said . He said you know you can get away without knowing fifth gear for the test   WHAT AN ARSE

He is an idiot . Unless a tree is very close to a boundary line it is not going to be taken into account as tree root damage is very unlikely .

Sols, you've probably got a Yellow Pages: just look up Tree Surgeons, Garden Centres, etc. and ask them what the max is, and when the tree should be pruned to keep it to size, though there are so many varieties, they may not be able to tell you without knowing the species.

The trees rarely exceed 10m in height, but that can be kept down by having a tree surgeon cut back branches during the winter if he thinks it necessary. The roots won't be a problem unless the tree is growing right up to the neighbouring house, which it obviously isn't. Your neighbour sounds as if he wants the world to turn on his axis, so don't put up with any interfering from him.

Are you renting? If you are, tell your landlord about the man's remarks, and if the tree needs a trim, get the landlord to pay for it. Don't do it yourself without written permission from your landlord, anyway, as it's his tree. If the neighbour twitters on again, give him your landlord's phone number/address and tell him to take up his nitpicking direct.

If you own the property, the Council can send out a person from the Environment office to confirm that the tree is not infringing any boundaries, and that will be an end of it.

Ah, but those are SURREY apple trees, Brian: they're better-behaved, and wouldn't dream of having a leaf out of place...

I don't think Apple Blossoms get too big. I think the Latin is Malus (syn Pyrus) coronaria and the net reveals that they will reach a height of 25ft in preferable conditions.
There is no way in the world the roots of this Tree will affect a property 20 metres away. In fact, they are commonly seen planted quite close to buildings with no ill effects. Very few tree roots cause problems to foundations...Eucalyptus being a culprit but your Apple Blossom will behave itself.

Thank you all so much but the tree has been neutered . We cut it right back so that should please the eejit . He thought I was gonna get rid of the tree to concrete the space for my new car . Some chance :D I think he was trying to scare me to be honest . This guy likes his own way and thinks that he runs the estate . You all know me well enough to realise that I ain't gonna back down :D

I believe that a trees roots only spread as far out as the canopy. So when you're checking up Sols, concentrate on the width of canopy, rather than height. If it's 20m away I would very much doubt that it will even touch his property.
