Ascot races Saturday 23rd January

UDS doesn't look a bit like Moscow Flyer, but everything he does on the racecourse is so much the same. He's a real talent, but you have your heart in your mouth ever time he meets a fence. Watching him racing reminds me so much of the feeling I had very time MF ran.

Won as he should have really. I just hope they can get SS there in some shape and we get decent ground.

Top class

i have the feeling he has to be ridden more agressively.

also think he was a better hurdler than is a chaser.

Reading between the lines of Ruby's post-race comments, I reckon it's guaranteed he'll be ridden more aggressively next time. He was just weighing them up today.

I disagree. Think he'll get exactly the same ride as he did today and in last years Arkle. Only a fall can prevent him from winning so why risk it?

The only fly in the ointment would be Special Tiara who is almost certain to take him on early at Cheltenham.

I was balls deep in Value At Risk for last season's potato race. He was running a fine race until emptying as the field went round the final turn. Plenty of horses ran stinkers in that race though and off 142 tomorrow he appeals as being rampantly well in.

Watched this with the owner. When he walked the course he said the ground was 'desperate' at Swinley Bottom but then in the climb to the line was more good to soft. In effect this was VAR's first run this year so maybe the ground and that combined. Didn't speak to him after but will do in next couple of days, but I would think he would be a little disappointed, although not one to be puffed up about his horse's chances, if nothing comes to light being wrong in the next couple of days.

Just spoke to the owner who says he was far too keen on that ground, and got tired, blew like a train, but they are happy he is okay and back on track

That's exactly the conversation my friends and I had today after reading the quote in the RP about his falls and basically saying he was un-backable today.

Just read this elsewhere Re: GR1 chases & trends ( I don't know if 100% accurate)

"In Grade 1s where the horse was a faller last time they have a very poor record of 2/70, bring that down to exclude novice chases and remove anything over 10/1 and it leaves Kauto Star as the only one to win a G1 chase off the back of a fall from 18 who attempted it."

Then SDG is at a great price for manana, if you like your trends & its correct.

Well that was a shitty trend to follow :(

Dodging Bullets may be just one of those horses who does enough and a win for him in the Game Spirit over Traffic Fluide would suggest a proper challenger even if the bare form of his Champion Chase win would not . The other imponderable appears to be Sprinter Sacre - if the horse who won the Desert Orchid turned up then he would appear to be some way behind UDS - the horse that sailed home at Cheltenham beating Simply Ned out of sight on the other hand would be much more of a threat .
