I have a horrible feeling that the answer is going to be Celine Dion, but I feel that in the apparent absence of her number one fan I should put in his proxy vote for Whigfield...
Swirly and Will (and, I suppose, PDJ who got the right answer to the wrong question!) are correct. Shania Twain has sold more albums than any other female recording artist.
Now I've got 'Come On Over' (which presumably accounts for about half those sales as it was in the charts for at least a couple of years) but I still find that a staggering result. I'd have gone for Madonna but maybe single sales reduced the appeal of her albums.
For anyone interested in a bit of class, the new album by Clare Teal (Michael Parkinson's current fave but don't hold that against her) is well worth a listen.
