I'm just off the phone to one of my bookies re getting bets on from abroad. I was remembering Tanlic trying to help me out last year but (me) being thick I got knowhere. So it's great to see the aul' yin back again.

I'm off to Spain for 11 days next Wednesday and want to get my bets on for the two Saturdays and maybe the odd other day while I'm away.

The chap on the phone suggested either opening an account from over there which could then be closed down when I come back or just phoning. I think my PAYG phone could make this quite expensive.

How do you guys get your bets on when you go abroad or don't you bother?

Something to do with the gaming laws in the other countries, DG. They pick up on the IP address and block it.

You can't buy UK Lottery tickets either. You have to buy them before you go, which would realy annoy me if I won the Euromillions on the Friday and they kept taking my £2 for the following Tuesday and Friday

My PAYG charges something like 60p per minute to UK landlines. I shudder to think how much they charge if I want to phone from abroad. Or I might just go for something from giffgaff if I can.

Is it obvious that I'm hopeless at these things?

I've got a mate who lives in France and still manages to get his bets online using Billy Hills. Not sure if that would be the same in Spain.

In Spain
you have now some bookies in many places
Sportium is ladbrokes, you can watch the races live too

any questions tell me

Is there someone you would trust with account details and password while you're away, and to whom you don't mind divulging the size of your bets? You could text your bets to them and they could put them on for you.

Getting bets on in Spain isn't a problem in the sense that there are plenty of places that operate as betting outlets and are geared towards UK tourists but they tend not to offer early prices or if they do they tend not to be competitive. I'd also have to take a considerable wedge (in case I don't have any winners) in cash to bet using readies and I'm reluctant to do that.

I like going into oddschecker and clicking my bets straight through. It's a bugger not being able to do so abroad.

In the USA last year I couldn't access most of my online accounts as it was prohibited but Skybet was fine for some peculiar reason

With time becoming an issue prior to my holiday, I eventually got through to O2 retentions.

They put me on a cheaper tariff which more than halves my PAYG calls and text charges. It also brings down the cost of phoning the UK from Spain down from £1.50 per minute to 24p, so it might be easier for me just to call my bets in.

I have never had a problem in Europe just using the normal bookmaker sites on my iPhone. This includes Spain and Portugal last year.

Me too I just opened them through Google, I think it blocks the blocker....dhhh

I have been able to use most sites on my phone while in Spain, although not Betfair for some reason

OK chaps, I'll try that but I don't feel so bad about just phoning in my bets now.

It might even be cheaper to phone the UK using the hotel room phone than my mobile.

Google "identity cloaker" DO.

If you do it the day before you go you'll get a free trial that will cover the weekend, otherwise just pay the c. £3 for a 5 day pass or whatever it is now.

Or an arguably easier solution I use regularly is install logmein central on your ipad/iphone and on your home PC (its free - although that is going to change soon).

Then leave your pc on at home while you're abroad, remote connect and place your online bets on your home pc.

I work abroad a lot with my job and both options work perfectly - albeit slightly slowly, depending on the wifi wherever you are.

The beauty about the identity cloaker option is if you have a quick enough wifi connection you can use catchup tv/ 4 on demand or an equivalent and watch the c4 races live on your ipad/iphone.

Works with racinguk mobile too.

Can`t believe the trouble DO has gone to with this...how long does it take to phone a few bets...much more than a minute or two:)...are you a Scotsman, by chance!!

At £1.50 per minute... it's the principle!

Given that you can buy a pint for €1 that's a lot of pints lost.

I would say that if you don't feel strongly enough about your bet to spend £3 on a two minute phone call to get on, the bet isn't worth having.

But skype is only free to another skype user Granger - AFAIK - and while I may be mistaken, bookies phone numbers aren't.

Although if they're free phone you may be okay.

Identity cloaker is still the way to go because a) it works with laptops, not just idevices andb) you'll be able to watch the races live.
