On this day in 1961 Britain's betting shops were legalised. I worked in one in the late sixties and it was a proper dive complete with excel commentary
Just wondering though does anyone actually use them anymore for betting on the horses when there are so many online facilities, or do you feel they are just glorified casinos these days. Pleased to see local councils will have a say on whether they will be granted a licence for new outlets in future.

Could that be a case of shutting the stable door after the horse has bolted though? Used to be one Ladbrokes in a little precinct near me for as long as I can remember, now there are 2 Ladbrokes and 1 Corals all within a few doors of each other.
