BetVictor Handicap Chase

Slightly surprised Imagine is still in. With the ground as it is. Then I noticed the run in the listed hurdle at Navan 2 years ago on good to yielding. Fair to say, it's worked out quite well

Imagine cost a lot, disappointed so far. Maybe the tongue tie and cheek pieces will turn the trick.

I've done a bit on Heltenham, but I've also organised obtaining 25/1 Black Gerry.

I'm not gigantically hopeful, but the fact he's now 16lb below his last winning mark isn't entirely discouraging.

I think Riskintheground is interesting at a fast-evaporating 10/1.

He's not on a bad mark, the ground should suit and it's the Heltenham yard.

Well, if Heltenham was a good thing and has not been withdrawn for good reason (possibly ground?) then they must think Riskintheground in an even better bet.

Yes, my plan was to take RITG to cover my losses on Heltenham (is he Topham bound?) but there didn't seem to be any strength behind him yesterday evening. I've enough on at 8s now to provide myself with a fig leaf.

From studying this weekend's cards, yes, I am, but I'm looking at the National etc.

Seriously thinking about starting the Lincoln today but will probably need to wait until I see the published card on Wednesday as I need the race reference numbers.

Euro's post has reminded me that I have The Lion In Winter ante-post for the Derby (20/1) and I have just ordered the Timeform Horses to Follow book for the Flat season which will arrive tomorrow. I'm not a great believer in their ratings but the industry seems to be and that can influence markets. The stuff is well enough written but not as sharp as it used to be and I still lament their influence in the dropping of the possessive adjective in racing parlance*, eg 'He ran well on debut' rather than 'his debut'.

*I don't actually blame Timeform for this. The possessive adjective can be dropped in their typical synopses but presenters I would have expected to know better appear to have assumed Timeform's grammarians have their phraseology correct. It's a form of hypercorrection that would have my old Higher English teacher** spinning in his proverbial.

**And if you're still alive and reading this, George, I hope you're proud that I remember this stuff

A chap called John (IIRC) Spence was my English teacher, he was Chairman of the Richard III Society and an absolutely tremendous bloke - Richard III (obviously) and Cider With Rosie were the works he guided us through for English Literature O Level.

Spence taught me things in the late 1970s about use of the English language that have stayed with me to this day.

“Next up is Imagine in the Handicap Chase at 2.40pm who frankly has been bitterly disappointing. I’m hoping rather than expecting cheeekpiecs and a tongue tie to help. He schooled brilliantly in them but he always does school well. I’m very happy with him at home but his performances on the track have not been what we hoped for this season.” Harry Derham

Good late headway, that, and I wonder if the Ayr meeting might be something they're looking at. There's the Cl2 h/cap over 2.5m on the Friday.

Yes, when he was dropped out right at the start that was my immediate thought. I did at one point think he was just being ridden very confidently but it was abvious from some way out that he was never going to be competitive.

Still no idea what they have in mind for Heltenham. I don't think he holds a Topham entry.
