Black Jack Ketchum

I agree with DO here - Faasel and BJK pulled miles clear of the rest, they both seemed to relish the battle... but it was my feeling as they fought it out that AP won the race!

I think it's possible that Faasel is improving with maturity, and will turn out to be quite good over fences. But I don't think either horse is top class.

I was never that big a BJK fan either. And the stable, like another recently mentioned, isn't that good at keeping horses going past their novice years over fences.

I thought that BJK and Faasel were having a competition to see who could bark the loudest! That's what it looked like to me anyway....

To be fair, they had to work pretty hard on horses that looked like they were trying to get behind each other!

Hurdles?

That thought had occurred to me Dom. Might we have witnessed the classic "in the kingdom of the blind the one eyed woman is queen"?

Given that they raced for about 3 furlongs, I'm equally inclined to put BJK's neck advantage down to McCoy's superiority in a drive over Brian Hardings. Personally, I prefer the horse to be the decisive factor, and the pilot to be additional.

He met Lough Derg on the same terms as he did at Aintree and was 13L's nearer to him this time.

Jonjo's apparent refusal to commit him to a staying campaign was also interesting. Could it be he knows he's got a faster one himself regardless of the ammunition other yards might have. Considering he's never run anything remotely close to a fast time before, I thought it a tad amusing that Jonjo's resorted to blaming the slow pace typical of the division!!! They go too slow for him. Well he wasn't saying that when he was a novice. Quite apart from that, he was actively ducking out of taking on horses who might go too fast for him over shorter too.

By way of final thought, Jonjo ran Rhinestone off top weight in the Coral Cup, and he hardly disgraced himself going down 2.25L's with JP Magnier in the plate

BJK did ok today, especially considering he's had to have an operation on his wind, but he still didn't look like he really wants 3 miles over hurdles. He would have won more easliy at 20 or 22f, I'm sure.

The runner-up ran on quite gamely, in spite of his reputation, and it was probably superior jockeyship that gained the day in the end, although Harding did nothing wrong.

But that was because RC was well handicapped in that race.

I was very impressed with Megan's Joy at DR on Friday. Murphy has a great knack for continually improving horses.
