My mates and I have a tendency to talk a lot of shite about schemes that rarely get off the ground.

You know the drill; drink talk about running marathons, buying a greyhound, walking the ring of Kerry, etc.

Anyway, something that we spoke about recently was the possiblity of having a Blokes' Decathalon one weekend. We have often argued about which of us is the most "blokey", and a competition seems the only way to settle the score. I am keen to get this one going, as I reckon it could be a bit of craic, so when I am in Dublin this weekend we are going to try and finalise the ten events. Scoring system will be 8 points for the winner of the event, 6 for the second, 5 for the third, all the way down to 1 point for the seventh and zero for the stragglers. So far we have the events below pencilled in, and I would like any ideas before we finalise the programme of events.

5 Field Events
100m sprint
Discus (3 goes each)
Poc fada (who can hit a hurley ball the farthest in 3 attempts)
2 mile race
Penalty shootout competition

5 Pub Events
Arm wrestling
General Knowledge Quiz (set by an impartial observer)
Pool (knockout tournament)
Pint drinking (fastest wins, knock-out tournament)
Darts (knockout tournament)

This is my preference, but other suggestions have included a round of pitch and putt, beermat flicking, penny pushing, jenga.

Anybody got any other bright ideas? What makes a man a man?

If you have a local sports centre I would think about including some sort of weight lifting, and/or a swimming competition - however many metres against the clock? Some of the gyms have those indoor mountaineering/abseiling walls, that would be a good test. On the water - of you all fancy a day out you could set up a canoe race BUT all of these must be supervised for safey reasons .

The choices are endless depending on your time scale and how masculine you lot want to be B)

Some sort of driving contest, testing navigational skills as much as speed.

Betting - either on the football, racing or maybe a poker tournament.

Pulling comp - To see who can snare the most attractive woman.

Canoeing sounds a bit gay.
White water rafting then.... :D
Not sure where you can do that in Dublin, though!

Driving wouldn't wash. Some of the lads don't even have their license. Betting is good. No way could we do pulling. Two of us are married, and all bar two have long-term birds.

Surely some test of satisfying members of the opposite sex should come into any 'manly' comp? Or would a simple display of equipment be enough?

For money - we used to bet on who could touch the ceiling of the pool room most with their elbow in 60 seconds. Being a short arse I got a head start and still lost.

Sumo Wrestling - probably best done as a pub event, but would fit into either category. Full regalia not required.

Neither situation disqualifies you [/b][/quote]
You've been watching Friends again, you naughty man.

Proving ones manliness should not necessitate posturing around showing ones physical and mental prowess in a series of puerile challenges.

Besides, you would never beat me.

A mate and I did something similar last year. The events included:

- A game of Tennis
- A game of Squash
- A round of Golf (Matchplay)
- Penalty Shootout
- Heads-up Poker
- Triple Jump
- One-on-One Basketball
(..four more that I can't remember)
- Steak-eating contest

I won the Tennis 6-1 6-0, The Squash 5-0, the Golf 8-3 (with a one shot handicap per hole), the Penalty Shootout 5-3 and the Heads-up Poker. He cried off after that.

The Steak-eating was going to be at one of those don't pay for it - if you can eat it type places for an extra incentive.

A mystery category, known only to BtB - and it's underwear.

12 points for going commando
10 points for chic boxers
8 points for amusing boxers
6 points for plain boxers
4 points for briefs
2 points for y-fronts
0 points for posing pouches

How many hairs can you pull from your arse without shedding a tear? You must use your fingernails and self admisinstration is disallowed.

Real men savour every drop of their drink with reverence and don't pour it over themselves or each other. Have a tasting competition.

Can I suggest that you invite the forum doctor, HONEST TOM, along, because he may be needed after the two-mile race!
Is there a forum funeral director Colin. May be more business for him imo.

A mate of mine has been running an annual "Open" competition for his mates the last couple of years - so far we've had the Gibraltar Open and the Morroccan Open. They've been generally full of amusing tasks along with some kind-of-serious events such as - 1) running around an athletics track, last man to drop out wins the event, 2) karaoke competition in Fuengirola (intensely amusing - not least as there were bonus points awarded to the one who was accosted by the ugliest/most slapper-like whore on the way back from the pub) 3) a general knowledge quiz incorporating an extensive "name the song" round comprising the first bars of tracks, 4) a clay pigeon shooting contest, 5) pairing up and timing each pair on how long it takes them to erect a tent on a beach blindfold and my personal favourite, the finale, in which each competitor lies face down in the surf as the tide is coming in - last man lying down wins. Naturally the competition takes place over a weekend (a long one!) and much drinking is to be had as well.

Of course you could always resort to the old favourite - pub golf. 18 holes is obviously preferable and each in different venues if possible, with different par awarded to each round according to the drink selected. Par scored on the amount of gulps it takes to down said drink.

Sensible.
