Breaking News

Phil, I attended the best non fee paying school in Birmingham and the kids there were awful in relation to each other. I then taught at 2 schools, one in inner city Liverpool and one in St. Helens, at both places the children bullied each other mercilessly both in and out of lessons.

I have since done 2 weeks work experience at the best school in Birmingham for which one does have to pay (£12,000 p.a)and guess what? Bullying was rife and if anything it was worse as the kids had more money and had a far greater opinion of themselves.

I have now been teaching at one of the worst schools in Birmingham for 4 years. In my time here, I have seen kids bullied again and again.

Now while I accept that there are hundreds of schools in the country of which I have no experience, this cross section gives me a reasonable amount of experience on which to draw.

The conclusions I reached are as follows - Kids are kids irrespective of gender, social class, race, religion or age. They are horrid to other kids when the need arises and often when it doesn't.

Please give me your counter argument.

I doubt that many of them have heard of Romeo and Juliet.

Now if they'd called him Bart, he'd be in trouble.

I have experience of both teaching and parenthood. I agree with Paul that children are generally heartless little fuckers, irrespective of social circumstance. They seem to be born with some kind of gene that compels cruelty to those who do not conform.

Children are like farts. (I can just about stand my own).

Yes, apparently 'Cruz' is Spanish for 'cross'. They must have named him after how Victoria felt one Sunday morning last year when she picked up the News Of The World....

Good one, AC. It's a bit of a shame they didn't play along with 'Romeo' and name the others Oscar and Foxtrot.

Good heavens, Brian, that's rung a faraway and distant bell: "La Bamba de Vera Cruz" played by Ethel Smith and the Bando Carioca! It was the flipside of a 78" I had as a kid, the other side was "Tic Toc Rumba". I expect you remember it well.

Particularly as the Spanish are kind of bemused they've called their son Cruz when it's a girl's name....I must rememer to call any son I spawn (God forbid!!!!!) Mary or Rosie.....

... speaking as someone christened Jon, I urge you to do so! :D

What I find odd about having a man's name, is that while I (strangely, perhaps) never got any teasing or nonsense about it as a kid, I've been surprised by how many adults take it upon themselves to make quite personal remarks about it, especially on the basis of no acquaintance whatsoever, as in banks, etc. The last time someone I didn't need to know further asked "Oh, that's a queer name for a woman, isn't it? Why were you called that?" I just said, "Well, because my Mother hated the name Fred - wouldn't you?"

BRILLIANT SONG :D READ THE WORDS
*********************************
My daddy left home when I was three
And he didn't leave much to Ma and me
Just this old guitar and an empty bottle of booze.
Now, I don't blame him cause he run and hid
But the meanest thing that he ever did
Was before he left, he went and named me 'Sue.'

Well, he must o' thought that is was quite a joke
And it got a lot of laughs from a' lots of folk,
It seems I had to fight my whole life through.
Some gal would giggle and I'd get red
And some guy'd laugh and I'd bust his head,
I tell ya, life ain't easy for a boy named 'Sue.'

Well, I grew up quick and I grew up mean,
My fist got hard and my wits got keen,
I'd roam from town to town to hide my shame.
But I made me a vow to the moon and stars
That I'd search the honky-tonks and bars
And kill that man that give me that awful name.

Well, it was Gatlinburg in mid-July
And I just hit town and my throat was dry,
I thought I'd stop and have myself a brew.
At an old saloon on a street of mud,
There at a table, dealing stud,
Sat the dirty, mangy dog that named me 'Sue.'

Well, I knew that snake was my own sweet dad
>From a worn-out picture that my mother'd had,
And I knew that scar on his cheek and his evil eye.
He was big and bent and gray and old,
And I looked at him and my blood ran cold
And I said: "My name is 'Sue!' how do you do! Now you gonna die!"

Well, I hit him hard right between the eyes
And he went down but, to my surprise,
He come up with a knife and cut off a piece of my ear.
But I busted a chair right across his teeth
And we crashed through the wall and into the street
Kicking and a' gouging in the mud and the blood and the beer.

I tell ya, I've fought tougher men
But I really can't remember when,
He kicked like a mule and he bit like a crocodile.
I heard him laugh and then I heard him cuss,
He went for his gun and I pulled mine first,
He stood there lookin' at me and I saw him smile.

And he said: "Son, this world is rough
And if a man's gonna make it, he's gotta be tough
And I know I wouldn't be there to help ya along.
So I give ya that name and I said good-bye
I knew you'd have to get tough or die
And it's that name that helped to make you strong."

He said: 'Now you just fought one hell of a fight
And I know you hate me, and you got the right
To kill me now, and I wouldn't blame you if you do.
But ya ought to thank me, before I die,
For the gravel in ya guts and the spit in ya eye
Cause I'm the son-of-a-bitch that named you 'Sue'.'

I got all choked up and I threw down my gun
And I called him my pa, and he called me his son,
And I come away with a different point of view.
And I think about him, now and then,
Every time I try and every time I win,
And if I ever have a son, I think I'm gonna name him
Bill or George! Anything but sue! I still hate that name!

Tell me about it, Jon....I get the same comments all the time - "...but that's a bloke's name, innt??" :teeth: No, love, it's "Domin-ique" not "Domin-ic" but they still don't get it, bless them.......in France it is a name for both females & males though.

My father insisted, for no other reason than comedy, that I should have the same initials as this chap.

I suppose, if he were a forumite, his reply to this would be......

"I didn't get where I am today by not calling my son CJ"

"Particularly as the Spanish are kind of bemused they've called their son Cruz when it's a girl's name...."
Cruz is a common male name, especially in North and South America. The current lieutenant-governor of California is a big guy named Cruz Bustamante. The US Census Bureau reported that in 1990 Cruz was a significantly more common male name than Rupert or Nigel and it is much more commonly used as a name for boys than as a name for girls.

I can't help thinking that had it been left to their father the boys might have names like Jack or James.

I was just going by what was on the news the other day Brian, I wouldn't know otherwise but then again I haven't come across anyone by the name of Cruz, be it male or female, in the 2 years I've been living in Gib....many Juans, Pepes, Marias, Angels, Joses etc....no Cruzs!!! Having said that, Latin-American Spanish can be very different to European SPanish or Catalan so maybe that's how the report came about.

I disagree with your last comment - both Jack & James are too long & difficult to spell - I reckon Bob would've been more like it!! :D

I seemed to have missed this.

My counter argument is very short.

The above opinion is just an opinion. It does not show that Cruz Beckham will be ridiculed because of his name when he goes to school.
