I've now got broadband at work and am impressed at the difference compared with my 'normal' connection, which has made me all the more determined to switch to broadband asap. I intend scouring the internet this weekend for comparisons but if anyone can recommend anything I'd be grateful.

At the moment I'm with Wanadoo Anytime (story of my life).

Not too many problems with NTL, Maurice, now I'm broadbanded instead of on ordinary dial-up. They have a general-purpose helpline (wait for ages), but a pretty decent Broadband helpline, and a free, downloadable 'Medic' which tries to troubleshoot for you via your pc before you try calling.

I have the b/b via a set-top box to the telly, for cable, and I also went with their phone service, just to avoid getting loads of different billings and setting up different d/ds. NTL has a good selection of free downloadable anti-crap stuff, too, and overall I'm fine with it.

I've heard nowt but rants about BT, but they may have improved. Prior to NTL, I was with Freeserve, which was also very good, but I wanted the set-top box for cable tv, which they couldn't provide, so switched.

BT get atrocious stick, but all I can say is the box turned up 18 months ago, I plugged it in, it worked, it has never stopped working.

BT continue to overcharge. You can currently get 8 mbps for the same price as bt's 2 mbps (also download limit = unlimited v bt's 30 GB) with bulldogbroadband.com. You also get cheaper calls (£12.50 per month for unlimited local and national calls). I've no idea what their service is like though.

ISP's will also shortly be offering VOIP calls meaning if your phoning someone else with broadband and VOIP the call will go via the internet and be free.

I agree with that. I am on BT and have never had a problem touch wood. Tom is probably right about overcharging but I have managed to convince my boss that I need broadband from home to do work out of hours, so I amn't paying for it.

I'm on AOL 2MB Broadband and I don't pay for it due to a flaw in their setup procedure that I've been exploiting for as long as I can remember.

Worked on dial-up and I was delighted that the same result was achieved when I got broadband.

Not good if you feel guilt easily.

I am with Telewest and have never had any problems. I pay £25 per month for a 1meg connection.

NTL's Broadband service has increased dramiticaly recently. They have been offering free upgrdaes, I pay £18 a month and my connection is 2mb I think.

Is it easy to change to Broadband? Do I have to cancel existing direct debits, change my landline supplier etc?

(Can you tell I'm hopeless at this kind of thing?)

Maurice, plenty of companies will do all the hard stuff for you such as altering Direct Debits.

Telewest 512. 14.99 a month for first 12 months. Support local call and very efficient and quick. Would recommend.

Mo - if you go to the Wanadoo home page there are links to the sort of information that you want including a 'frequently asked questions' page and customer support phone numbers. I'd guess that moving from Wanadoo Anytime to Wanadoo Broadband would be your simplest option. If you pay by direct debit, Wanadoo can simply alter the monthly amount. I've heard no adverse publicity about Wanadoo Broadband and it appears to be one of the cheaper options. One thing you may want to consider is that you'll have a minimum 12 month commitment.

Bulldog have just been at my door and I am moving to them. There is a one month contract only and it is £17.50 for the first 6 months for an 8Meg connection. Looks good to me!

Nope. It is £28 per month after 6 months but with no contract you can easily move to someone else!

No, I meant do they physically change it in any way (if not I'm wondering why they're not all offering 8mb).
