This is really for people who drive few miles a year.

Last month as my renewal alert came through I did my usual comparison trawl. I was being quoted over £500 but one company came up with a seemingly bargain deal.

They were going around £250.

It turned out this was because I claimed I was doing around 3000 miler per annum and this policy involved an upfront £135 plus a mileage charge (3.2p per mile). It involve putting a mileage tracker in my car which fed back to the insurers. I got my first monthly update yesterday. 167 miles in the month. If I keep thatkind of average going (and bearing in mind I'll be out of the country for at least a month, maybe two) I'm looking at an annual total of around £200 (fully comp, no voluntary excess, breakdown cover, etc, included).

I reckon if anyone out there is a low-mileage driver something like this might be beneficial.

(The insurer is One-Call, underwritten by Ageas.)

I paid £325 with AA Insurance at the last renewal. I'm not driving more than 1,500 miles a year, and a few years ago I tried to knock a few pounds off the bill as the annual mileage figure quoted in the documentation was around 4,000. That didn't work as I was told it would be difficult to get insurance cover with such a low figure.

I'm on £175 with M&S - low mileage and a good driving record. Plus car kept in a "locked" barn overnight. It went up this year for the first time in about 4 from £150. That's fully comp too. I have a 21yo Saab 93 convertible.
