Llewellyn loses job after difficult 2008-09 season

CARL LLEWELLYN has lost his job as salaried trainer at Lambourn’s Weathercock House Stables, and is to be replaced by Warren Greatrex, who is Oliver Sherwood’s assistant.

Llewellyn endured a difficult season last winter with only 17 winners, but he ended the campaign on a high when Hennessy landed Sandown’s Bet365 Gold Cup under an inspired ride from Tony McCoy.
Hennessy races for Malcolm Denmark, the landlord at Weathercock House who three years ago headhunted Llewellyn to take over from Mark Pitman.
A far from dispondent Llewellyn said on Monday: “I had lunch with Malcolm on Sunday and he told me that be I would be replaced by Warren Greatrex. He wasn’t happy with the way I was training the horses. That’s fair enough, and I’m certainly not bitter over getting the sack. Malcolm pays the bills and, like every employer, if he isn’t happy he makes changes. I’ve no regrets and life moves on.”

Fair play to him, he's taken it very well, in public at least:(:(

We visited the yard at Lambourn's Open Day and found a really strange atmosphere, figured something was up. Hardly anyone there, no pretense at even trying to put labels up for horses or anything. Loads of unbroken, unnamed horses who were quite old to not have names.

Think it is odd that Mark has returned also.

Wish Carl luck whatever he does, would be ncie to think he would stay in racing but is saying he is not planning to train anymore. :(

Just shows you how difficult it is to train for the one main owner - so many fall-outs recently. Jane Chapple-Hyam & the Hays, Eoghan O'Neill & Fretwell, Vicky Haigh & Budge. Feel sorry for Carl who always comes across as a decent bloke but I would imagine he has himself covered. He's wisely not even gone down the wife/family route so saved a few quid there!

I like his attitude... "So sack me!"

Sounds like he's happy enough to be out of his situation although I'm not convinced he's much of a trainer.

Denmark talked about the basic experience required to be a trainer and that some top jocks just don't have that experience. I would have thought CL would have coming from the Twiston Davies yard. Sounds to me like he made some mistakes, either through feeding or injury as Denmark complained not about winners but not having runners. In his new trainer he has gone with someone who is supposedly an "expert feeder of a horse".

You can have all the expert feeders in the world but if the horses are lame/have a virus/wind problem yada yada then it's not going to make any difference! Even though feeding the horses well is the most important thing that's still a bloody stupid thing to say.

And reading between the lines it seems that the latter is the reason Denmark wanted a change.

Wish Carl all the luck in the world, hes a top bloke and IMO a good trainer, sadly owner not an easy guy to work for, take my word for. Although I have worked under Warren so I'm glad he's got an oppotunity to do it for himself, hes very good and has a lot of experience, but im sure he has a young family so something i'm surprised at.

It will be interesting to see how many staff stay now that Carl has left.Word is the atmospheres been terrible there for a long time and many said theyd only stay as long as he was in charge.

You missed out Willie McKay and Everyone ;)

I do wonder how much longer Stewart Parr will last,McKay has sent Yungaburra and Haajes to near neighbour John Balding which I found interesting.

I noticed that too Arkers, and I'd reckon Balding will do well as long as he's given some rein to do his own thing.

Well Mr. D has an excellent track record with trainers eh?

Couldnt Carl get Monsignor back on the track?

This is the point - or so I have been told by someone who investigated the job. Seems the trainer, inc Parr, does not live in the yard - Willie McK does - and he (SP) spends a lot of time of the golf course, whilst Willie and his sidekick the vet get on with the job  Allegedly, ie that was the impression given to my informant, which may be erroneous of course...

Balding will run his own show no doubt - WMcK doesn't interfere when he has horses with other trainers. He's had one or two with Stan.

Very sad about Carl, but from what he once told me he only went into training because of the offer of having that yard. He said he would never train, nor ever have considered the job, if he had to start from scratch grubbing around for horses. He did make a few mistakes, one fatal, but his staff were very loyal to him and I think he's had a rough time of it.

I'd be interested to know what your source is HS. I've heard similar, but it possibly originates from the same person.

All very much allegedly, of course. People have had posts deleted for less than a bit of gossip they've picked up that is so damning, Headstrong.
