I seem to have reached an age where everything in my house [including me] is falling apart. The latest is the cd player. How long do they last for? It's a Pioneer, and I've just shocked myself by realising how much a new one is going to cost; it's @ 20 years old [wish I was]. Can't seem to find anywhere that repairs things like cd players and, if I do don't want to pay fifty odd quid just to find it's not repairable. Was going to get the new Neil Young cd tomorrow as well. Well pi***d off tonight.

Would I still use the pioneer amp with it? I've just looked up the Mission speakers I've got with it as well. If I'd known how much they were worth over the years I'd've been scared to use them. I get so annoyed with myself for being so useless.

yes will work no problem with the pioneer amp....Denon have always been good at this sort of price..first cd player i got in 1987 was a Denon

you had a very good run at 20 years with the Pioneer tbh..i think you will like the Denon

which missions have you got..760 or 780?..they made loads of models but those two sold bucketloads

is the pioneer amp the A400?

They just say Mission and they're about 3 ft tall. The amp says SA 540. The guy I spoke to at a repair shop says it's usually when they're about 20 years old that they start to go, and parts could be a problem. The best person to look at the player would be my ex but he's still smarting over the fact that I insisted on keeping the stereo stuff, my argument being that I had a much better taste in music! I've got quite an assortment of cd players floating round the house [along with the original home made amp and deck from the 1970's, with their own huge guitar speakers] so I might just try using one of them for a while. Trouble is, I think I've been spoiled. [I think I'm going to order a Marantz; hopefully it will outlast me....]

the amp is a 30 watt per channel job from 1984

the speakers might be

or

yes..Marantz CD players are pretty good

if you have the money i would spend up to about 150 max which should get you something decent like the denon or Cambridge..the Cambridge ones are very good

The cheapest Marantz is this one

alternatively if strapped you could even use a DVD player... but for CD playback these tend to sound a bit brittle & bright against a dedicated CD player

The Maranz CD6004 is on offer at a local shop so I'm going to look/listen to one on Saturday. The speakers look like the Argonaut ones [tall and thin] except for the fact that the name is right in the middle of the speaker. At least I can still listen to the hundreds of audiotapes I've still got floating around the house.

im with ec here. have marantz and denon from richer sounds too.. quality stuff and service

Happily listening to my old audio tapes at the mo; perhaps a good sound system is wasted on me! Not going to Richer Sounds...another shop has got a better deal at the moment.
