Looks as if there's an extreme cold spell coming in,if its as bad being made out then we are going to see a lot of abandonments in the next few weeks and a lot of prep races lost.

Looks like 'colder than average' rather than 'extreme cold'. I wouldn't worry about it. The up side is that it should be dry allowing gradual draining and giving us conditions fairest for the majority of runners.

I would rather cold but snow and then compacted ice could throw major disruption.supposed to be worst further east and north....fingers crossed

It is always best to wait for the Met Office to confirm an extreme cold spell is expected rather than to rely upon the Daily Mail and Express - two newspapers that would not know the truth if it jumped up and bit them.

the express is becoming a joke with their obsession with the weather its nearly front page news every day. due to cuts they have a severe shortage of journalists giving them very little leeway on how to fill out their pages.

You think the Met Office has a clue ?

Regular readers of Private Eye will know that the so-called "Weather Expert" employed by The Daily Express (I can't be bothered to look up his name) has been discredited on several occasions. However, Richard "Dirty" Desmond still uses him because extreme weather forecasts sell papers.

'Arctic Blast set to Cripple Britain' - Burst pipes threaten millions of homes - damage could cost us £billions.

What are your problems with the Met Office?

In my opinion (and I have followed the weather closely for the past few weeks as there have been some interesting things going on) the UK Met has covered itself with glory...some models have been forecasting snowmageddon 5 days out, and they have refrained from publishing the threat due to the uncertainty.

It is a fine line between keeping the public informed and ready for severe weather and risking getting it wrong.

I think they're doing just fine.

That is a weird article.

Long range forecasts were always flagged as experimental by the Met Office, and they have since stopped going past 30 days. So he is still criticising them for something that they always said was an experiment, and which they have stopped publishing. The "barbecue summer" in question saw above average temperatures. The big mistake they made was using the "B-word".

The Met Office did a fantastic job of predicting the November/December 2010 cold outbreak, which they flagged for weeks in advance. I don't think they could have done much more.

The rest of the article seems to be a very tired, well-worn AGW tirade.

You show me a graph, I show you one. Nobody will win. But above is my first effort.

I hope this Saturday is unaffected by the weather, there are good competitive cards scheduled for Ascot, Haydock and, I think for the first time on a Saturday, Taunton.

Looking forward a bit further, Cheltenham Racecourse just posted on Twitter

"Frost covers deployed today to keep the frost off the course this week. No threat to 26 Jan as things stand. Going is soft"

Absolute blizzard here this morning, been snowing for around 2 hours and its undrivable on the roads already.5 or 6 hours more expected,no sport this weekend methinks

The courses seem to be doing all they can to get the tracks raceable but what if the horses can't get there??
