The BBC website forecast for Cheltenham on Friday is for -4 C during the day and -10 C overnight, rising to a high of -1 C on Saturday. Will they be able to protect the track against such low temperatures?
The trouble here at the moment is the snow on top of the covers, the ground underneath is raceable. Because of the winds blowing the snow around some of the covers have no snow on them, others have up to 50cm on them.
It has been snowing for a lot of the day here but not appreciably so. Wouldn't take too much notice of the forecast temperatures, they change it every few hours.
The covers used only protect to `-2 degrees or so. Anything less was a problem.
Maybe they have improved since...
That is air temp of -2; the ground temp would be about 5 degrees less than air temp .
Your spot on there. I was hoping we might see Nicky Henderson's Tistory run early next month but that could be scuppered if the gallops are frozen. Binocular's and Grandouet's races in Ireland and Wincanton could be lost to the weather which will cause a few headaches.
Maybe they should have more of these bumpers for hurdlers and chasers where trainers with no where else to go can at least get a run into them.
The weatherwatch should include which yards are worse hit and unlikely to be able to work their horses. Who have large indoor areas and who has pools all helps.
No doubt the real pros will be taking notes for when racing gets back to normal as having that info is worth it's weight in gold.
Going to be an awful lot of unfit horses being trained on the racecourse if the cold spell lasts another couple of weeks
