Cheltenham Trials Day- Saturday

Looks like the hole has been caused by a collapsed drain fairly close to the two furlong marker, and right in the middle of the course between the rail and a fence ( 2nd last ? ) so the damaged area cannot be dolled off. They are planning to finish the race on the Old Course even though it is getting very dark now.
 
The vets at cheltenham is only small animal I think, they take the hospital needing horses to Three Counties at Tewkesbury as far as I can remember ( though they can do fairly basic X-rays on site if needed - but they wouldn’t get to the pelvis properly, it’s definitely still best palpated rectally!!)

poor Nicky - fingers crossed their experience with Buzz and Fondmort will help them with him if / when he goes home.

Oh I didn't realise. I thought I had seen that they had a hospital next to where the coaches all used to park? But no it looks like a small animal unit.
There was me thinking - oh it's got an amazing on site hospital so every eventually is catered for - but no. That does surprise me to be honest. I would have thought it was the ideal site for one.

My Dad started out his veterinary career working as an assistant for Cheltenham based vets, Peter Hull and Tim Eaton and their practice was in the middle of Cheltenham so they did all the racecourse work back in those days. My dad still used to get invited back to work the Festival every year though up until the late 80s. There were only the three of them on duty there too!

Nothing to do with the above chat, but wasn't Brother Walfrid the founder of the Celtic Football Club? He's just been sold at this evening's Tattersalls auction at Cheltenham racecourse.
 
Better for it to happen today - if nothing else it showcased just how brilliant and speedy the care is - he wouldn’t have got that on the gallops ( and even there it’s quick compared to most places!!)

I've got a feeling I just don't take racing that seriously relative to most.

I was listening to Lydia Hislop before that last race and thinking: "You'd think she was Lyse Doucet in Gaza or Emily Maitlis at the Davos Forum - she's at Cheltenham and they're shifting the rails before the last so they can dodge a hole in the ground. No one's about to invade Greenland."

But most of racing social media is praising her to the skies for doing a Maitlis-esque hatch job on the CoC after racing.

I guess I'm just out of touch with the zeitgeist (thank God!)

to be fair that drain cover could have caused a travesty if gone unchecked, luckily it was checked and sorted.

Also I just dont watch Racing TV anyways, the ITV staff didn't even mention the drain cover, I didn't even know until someone mentioned it on here

"Sir Gino was transferred from Cheltenham to the Three Counties Veterinary Clinic and following scans and x-rays he does have a fractured pelvis but having spoken to the great team that are caring for him they are hopeful that although this is obviously significant they have reported that he is comfortable and stable. This is great news to us all. The prognosis is guarded and further examinations over the next few days while he is there will be able to determine the extent of the injury and any prognosis for the future. Thank you to everyone for their messages and concerns which are much appreciated and we will keep everyone up-to-date with any further news but the fact that he's comfortable tonight is the most important thing. Thank you"

What is his theory behind modern feeding? I was of the opinion that the old fashioned "bran mash" on a Saturday after work in preparation for a non-active Sunday actually was detrimental due to the bran altering the calcium phosphorus ratio and therefore leading to weaker bone density?

What I did notice in the Unibet Hurdle today was that prior to Sir Gino being pulled up, he didn't look overly happy at I think it was the 2nd hurdle, he jumped it and the tail went up so I do wonder now, with hindsight, if something was niggling him from quite early on in the race.
