Coral Ad Banned

The ad, by DLKW Lowe, shows two men reading the Racing Post in a barber shop, when music starts and a woman struts in dressed as a jockey. As she walks past the two men, she stops to close one's gaping jaw with her whip.

A voiceover then says, "Get ready for today’s great offer," and the woman holds a sign bearing the odds for a horse in an upcoming race. One of the men then places a bet on Coral mobile app.

A single complainant argued that the ad linked gambling to seduction, which goes against UK advertising rules.

Gibraltar-based Coral claimed that, while its ad made use of an attractive female character, it "did not consider that it linked gambling with seduction, sexual success or enhanced attractiveness". It added that the female "not flirt with or seduce the men and there was no suggestion that the men would be more attractive or sexually successful after betting".

However, the ASA ruled that the manner of the woman’s entrance placed an immediate emphasis on her sexual attractiveness, with the camera angle focused on her knee-high boots and then cutting to show tight jodhpurs, a whip and a jersey cut to reveal her midriff.

The ASA said: "Viewers would be likely to understand the men's reactions to the woman's presence as being signs of their attraction to her, rather than excitement at the odds she held up on a card at one point in the ad."

The ad must not be broadcast again in its current form, the ASA ruled.

I'm glad. It's a horrible ad. It sends out all the wrong messages. A Media Studies class would go to town on it. Very cheap, nasty and demeaning to women (which doesn't say much for the young woman featured).

It also strikes me as completely inappropriate to end with the slogan, after all the shots detailed above depicting the young woman as sexually attractive, "Stick one on it!" or words to that effect. If I'm not mistaken, there's also a whiplash sound effect in there too.

It would be interesting to hear what the woman contributors to the forum make of it.

I hadn't seen the advert until a few minutes ago. Immediate thoughts -

I presume that it's only gambling that isn't allowed to be linked to seduction, because there are far, far worse ads in all forms of media out there at present.

Which in itself only serves to reinforce the public perception that gambling is a bad thing.

It is certainly a lot less risque than, say, the Flake adverts of yesteryear, which pretty much equated a bar of chocolate to oral sex.

In short, I think it's a load of old cobblers.

Load of old twaddle. People are too quick to pretend to be offended by things these days. It's like there's some kind of competition

It was a rubbish advert anyway compared to the latest Ladbrokes ones which I think are really clever.

This is ridiculous. Nothing wrong with the ad whatsoever, and if you don't like an advert you are more than welcome to not use the product or service being advertised. We are turning into a nation of politically correct prudes.

And I would definitely 'stick one on' the bird in the advert; she's proper fit.

Those adverts perplex me. They essentially portray their customers as mindless idiots who will lose money every weekend.

Which strikes me as being a bit weird.

But not if you bet with Ladbrokes! And, no matter how many times I see them they still make me laugh. The 'Ladbrokes Life' ones are good too. I'd love to see what the VW advertisers [the best in the game imo] would come up with if they turned their attention to betting shops.

The Ladbrokes life is getting your account restricted after having a measley £40 on at 7-2, in my experience.

My friend is in the paddy ones where the horses are circling at the start - if you know your colours you'd recognise quite a few of the dr pritchard colours from the last few years....

I am not surprised it was banned .It was like something from the 1970s .

The amusing thing about most of the ads - Ladbrokes and the Stan James ones is that it portrays most young punters as fat or gormless lazy idiots. Is that their target audience ?

Shows that they have done the research!
