Last night I backed City Chief for this race at 20/1, the best price at the time.

(I backed it because it's a second-season chaser likely to improve some way better than its form, is trained by Hendo who only has three in the race and I'm not sure I can fancy the other two, and, if it turns up on the day, I thought was likely to be a single-figure price so I wanted it at least onside at this stage. I haven't studied the form at all, to be honest - just can't get my head into it after deciding to retire a few weeks back but want to maintain an interest in the racing.)

I see PP/Bfair have pushed it out to 25s so presume they've heard it might miss the race. Has anyone heard anything?

I've cashed out for now (can always go back in again at the longer odds) for a very minor loss (0.5%).

No indication either way on the stable tour (ATR) from a month ago:

He did well for us last season winning a couple at Hereford and the Towton at Wetherby but I have to admit I was disappointed with his third to Sail Away at Ayr. He is a good jumper who stays well, and I think he has a bright future.

Edit - curiously enough, one of the three, Dusart, doesn't get a mention in that stable tour.

He'll be interesting. I couldn't get him right last season and was never happy, but things started to come together and he showed some green shoots of recovery and was running well in the Scottish National, but got knocked out of it. That encouraged us, but he's off 154, so it's not going to be easy.
The Coral Gold Cup could be for him, as could the National if he gets his act back together.RP

Looking at this race it strikes me how different it is from the Paddy Power. That race I couldn't bet in, I could hardly rule anything out, it was so competitive. This next week is the polar opposite. I have it between Mahler Mission and Monbeg Genius.

Glad I cashed out my bet on City Chief. He's out to 40s after a moderate show the other day.

I'd noticed a few days after I'd made the bet that he'd got an entry for the Welsh National which had me thinking he isn't a Hennessy horse, probably not fast enough for it.

I think it's very brave of you to narrow it down so definitively, Euro.

I'll probably spend a wee bit of time on the race once the five day decs come out tomorrow but right now I'd want a second-season novice onside and both yours qualify.

You would think because of the prize money this would be a targeted race but a few are engaged in the Becher chase and the welsh national.
I've took 25/1 Threeunderthrufive but I dont know if he will run.Nicholls said he was 5lb too high last year and after his 2nd place last time he is only a pound lower now.
The other one that interests me is The Big Breakaway but hes not in the betting so I assume the Welsh national will be the target and hes been dropped since its last run to a pound lower than when finishing 2nd last year.

Probably, it just doesn't look to have anywhere near the same quality the PP did though - if you look at the top of the weights below the top four (ahoy Senor and the ones who ran in the Betfair) It's Stolen Silver, Midnight River, Chantry House and Dusart - that's a far cry from Stage Star and Notlongtilmay.

“The Lambourn trainer, who uses the track’s biggest fixture as an opportunity to run some of his stars for the first time in the season, will attempt to win the Coral Gold Cup for the first time since Triolo D'Alene in 2013.

Henderson said the £250,000 contest has always been the objective for Dusart, with the eight-year-old on course for his first appearance since being brought down in the Scottish National at Ayr in April.

Henderson said: "He's in good form and this race has always been the plan, but I'd very much like some decent ground for him.

“He was out of sorts last season, and the only time I thought he was coming to himself was when he went to the Scottish National. He was running a very good race when he was brought down half way down the back straight and that was the first time I'd seen him travel and jump all season.

"This season, he's come in and he's been good, bright and bouncy all the way through. It's difficult to find races for them to start with, so it'll be tough, but he's been here before and he's fit and well."

If Henderson has got Dusart back, he must be in with a decent chance. Maybe a big “if” though.

If Nicky had any intentions of running Dusart I would have thought he would have given him a run somewhere by now.

I like the chances of Our Power 20/1 EW. Sam Thomas knew exactly what he was doing when he ran here over hurdle to get him spot on.

He for me is the one they all have to beat and with 4 possibly 5 places available I won't be missing him if he turns up as expected

If Sam Twiston Davis takes the mount that will put the icing on the cake

I have to take the chance on one of my favourite horses. KITTYS LIGHT 16/1 Boosted.
Usually is better after christmas but 2yrs ago it finished 2nd twice before Christmas.
7lb higher than winning the bet365 but is capable if Christian Williams is trying.risky I know but its had 2 hurdle runs so a chance is taken.

I'm on Midnight River AP at 14s single and in a double with Stage Star PP (8s and 12s). If MR wins it will finance me for Cheltenham travel and betting in March, but may cash out a little of the risk. Decisions!

Have had a go at Bill Baxter at 20/1, though only a small bet as I'm not sure if he is a confirmed runner.

He has a 14lbs pull with Mahler Mission for 10L in the Colin Parker, and whilst he's raced mainly over intermediate trips over fences, he had a couple of 3m+ runs over hurdles which suggest he has a reasonable chance of seeing this out. He should come on from Carlisle, he's generally a safe jumper, he goes on pretty-much any ground, he has a feather-weight if Ahoy Senor stays in, and I like prominent runners who stay out of trouble for this race.

My 3 against the field:

Off 148 Datsalrightgino has to go close having had a quiet prep. That Stage Star line of form is getting ever better, and second season chaser like him looking so unexposed looks perfect for this. 20/1 looks very much the wrong price.

Similarly Monbeg Genius has to be interesting on the Fastorslow formline. PU first time when most of Jonjo's were running poorly first time. Some rish given he didn't complete makes 8/1 just an okay price.

Midnight River has had this as the target for a long time, and as his price told us, he very much needed the race in the Charlie Hall. I watched him school this morning with TKOR, and he looks primed and ready to go. I'm surprised he's 11/1 currently. He won't be on the day.

Followed you in with this one but took 18/1 to 7 places with SkyBet once declared. Thought he might go to Newcastle instead he’s also declared there but has this as 1st preference

Need a few things to go our way, but fingers-crossed, Vike.

Edit: Have backed it up with your bet too. Cheers for the nod.

There's a nightmare scenario brewing here - they race tomorrow and in doing so, removing the covers, put Saturday's card in jeopardy.

Has to be a danger, Euro, though if I’m being absolutely honest, I care more about Newcastle going ahead than I do Newbury.

Tomorrow’s Newbury card absolutely shite, imo, and they’d be better sacrificing that in favour of Saturday’s, if there was any doubt.

Same happened at Cheltenham last year if you remember? I was supposed to be going too.

Yep I was there, it was very unfortunate, some people suggested moving the meeting to Saturday and Sunday instead of Fri/Sat, they'd have lost both days that way.

As Grasshopper suggests above, maybe sacrifice today for tomorrow............but you are dealing with unpredictable British weather and weather forecasters who aren't very good.
