An ex brother in law of mine (divorce) died last week and his family are divided on when, where and how to arrange his funeral. Assuming cremation, does anyone know the exact procedure once the body and coffin goes through the curtains ? Coffins seem to be quite expensive and I can't believe they burn them, probably reuse them again and again ?

Mrs Grass has a morbid fear of being cremated - which is bizarre, given she will be dead at the time.

Anyway, I warned her many years ago to keep a steady flow of gamms coming in my direction, otherwise she is toast (literally). So far so good.

Is this info of any use, DG?

Coffin should be burnt with the body unless crematorium dodgy. Twenty years ago the cheapest for our Mum was £900. Now I think you can buy ones made out of recycled material but may depend on the undertaker, and if chose to go for burial rather than cremation. Usually takes a few days before the 'ashes' are ready to collect, they will advise when /if service booked. They will provide an urn unless family wants to supply something specific/particular but if to be buried must be compliant with H&S etc.

Apparently there is a Code of Cremation Practice, according to which the coffin has to be cremated too.

Is the coffin cremated with the body?
The Code requires that the coffin be placed in the cremator in exactly the same condition as that in which it was received at the crematorium. Crematorium regulations require that the coffin and all its fittings and furnishings be made from materials suitable for cremation. The Environmental Protection Act 1990 has placed a new responsibility on Cremation Authorities to ensure that the process is completed under controlled conditions which will minimise the impact on the environment. In these circumstances it will be necessary for any items included in the coffin for presentation or viewing purposes to be removed by the Funeral Director before the coffin is conveyed to the crematorium. It will not be possible for any floral tributes to be included with the coffin for cremation.

Must go to grass's cremation. Especially if we hear some hammering on the coffin lid and plaintive "let me out"

How we laughed

(wonder if that's happened and it's been a case of "fck it we paid an arm and leg for this. Finish it off")
