When i was a youngster my dad used to get this delivered every day and it used to be a useful informative read - a lot better than The Sun.

What happended?

Found a copy on the station this morning and read it for the first time in ages - couldn`t believe how bad it was:

Four pages devoted to Big Brother
Eight pages covering football in June shrug::
A feckin column written by WAG and bouncer shagger Alex Curran
Derek McGovern
One paragraph on the French Open

Can`t believe The Sun could be any worse nowadays.

Those two words really sum it up - any paper which gives that little p*^&k column space isn't fit for wrapping up a fish supper.

Back in the 1960s the Mirror was a decent newspaper, with quality columnists like Donald Zec and Cassandra.

It's just rubbish these days...tits, "celebrities" and football.

Yes, it was - hard as it probably is for younger people to believe nowadays. My mother's lifelong friend worked on it (and the late Daily Chronicle) and the journalists were witty, original, and capable of investigating real issues of the day fearlessly and incisively. Cassandra was marvellous, a scalpel to the excesses of luvviedom and self-regard - I remember the case where Liberace sued him successfully for his implication that he was homosexual.

Why do you blame the paper? Do you really think that our empty celebrity obsessed, instand gratification seeking, culture of today would get to the second par of a Pilger story on Cambodia?

Newspapers reflect the market, I'm afraid, Old Chap.

You speak for yourself, AC! Why, once I've whisked through Mephisto, read the editorials, the political columns, the arts and books reviews, I'm fair panting to hear news of Parasite Hilton's latest escapade.

What did Alex have to say though? Was she talking about the exploitation of Eastern European sweatshop workers or about shoes?

All in context, I wouldn't want to see Pilger back in the Daily Mirror talking about handbags and clashing colours in Moda In Pelle.

I disagree. Celebrity obsession is mainly a female thing, and they get their fix with OK, Hello, Heat etc. It`s pointless filler.

Something went a bit wrong with the bold tags there in the quote - I was of course referring to Derek McGovern.

I think the newspapers (and other media) need to take a bit of responsibility and stop hiding behind the the-public-want-it shield.

Over 20 years ago, the Daily Record took an editorial decision to stop printing Page 3 berr wimmin. They've never gone back on that even though sales are falling generally (they went up for a while at the start) but all newspaper sales are in decline anyway.

I reckon they need to take a stand and/or action and stop pandering to the lowest common denominators. Maybe if they start trying to educate and inform, even amuse, this country will start moving forwards again.

Well it`s obvious, women like gossip and i never see a bloke with Hello/Ok/heat magazine.

Men are just as sad for buying FHM/Nuts and Zoo.
