Dam Influence

Chaumi, was the ground soft? Both of those sires I would associate with soft ground horses, particularly Whipper. Wizz kids performance at Longchamp is a good example of a whipper who relished the soft going.

Exactly. It was soft.

So the Whipper runner was (reasonably obvious) given it had already had one promising run.

The question is - is there anything obvious in the dam/damsire of Dubaya which might have helped us see there might be an upset. In this case, maybe it was just purely the Dubawi influence we might have noted.

I'd expect a Whipper to need some help from the dam side to win over a mile at 2. The Dubawi's dam, on the other hand, has produced a couple of decent (~100 rated) middle distance horses.

i think the term.. needs some help.. is a good one and its how i tend to look at the Dam side if there are enough offspring to go at.

Lets say a horse out of a dam stays 10f with a sire that has an average distance of say 8.5f. If another horse from same dam has a sire with 9.5f + then i would be looking to think that running at less than 10f for the second one may be a negative.

you are basically setting a marker and working from that..yes we are talking very little course evidence..but its better than nothing

Looks good...and has it worked in practice enough to warrant the thought and effort?

its just one of the mental checks i do ..i've never thought its not a good clue so i'd say yes

maybe we could look at a few maidens through the winter and try and use that idea and anything else that people think is a tell about distance requirement

Good idea. Bound to be a few worth analysing.
