Sad to hear of the passing of one of the truly unique sports broadcasters of all time...his voice was the soundtrack to sport from my first memories of watching TV

RIP

The soundtrack to sport, as you say, and donor of his name to Private Eye's Colemanballs column, which celebrates the diverse ways logic and the English language can get mangled by commentators in the heat of the moment.

RIP

I suppose everyone has their tastes in commentators ... lets just say that

But as with O Toole another bit of the past gone

Wow, I always thought it was Coleman too.

It's also sad when you see knighthoods being dished out to flashes-in-the-pan right left and centre these days that Coleman never got that honour. He put the 'broad' into sports broadcasting and did far more for the industry than the likes of O'Sullevan who was, by comparison, a one-trick pony.

I concede. Sorry for the misleading inference that it was Coleman who said those words.

lots of people thought the same if you google it

another misconception..not about David Coleman..was the panel show from the sixties where "Janice" used to say "I'll give it foive and i'll buy it"..I always thought it was juke box jury...but it was a part of Brian Mathews show...again ...if you google it lots of people also believed it was JBJ.

He was a unique talent as a sports broadcaster, it didn't matter wether it was the world cup, or the men's downhill slalom, he had a relaxed manner in his commentary which was a joy to listen too.

I thought he was a crap commentator with a tense and irritating manner. He was especially poor at football adding little and often getting the players wrong.

Do. He may not have taken a gong because I think he was a bit to the left ( not that that is essential, nigella lawson refused an mbe too). Get a feeling I read that somehwere and if so full credit to him.
