David Johnson

Poor bugger. Only posted on here yesterday too. Suppose there's an opening at timeform now for someone

Very sorry to hear this. Will miss seeing him with the Pipes by the saddling box to the right hand side of the pre parade ring at Cheltenham.

Very naughty Clive ;-)

Don't think he had that many left in training. Financial downturn cost him a fair few quid I understand so numbers were vastly reduced from their peak around 8/10 years ago.

Some fantastic names down the years have carried the silks. RIP.

Very sad news for his family and friends. Always came across as a really decent bloke, put fortunes into the game and deserved his big days.
RIP

Very very sad. So sad for his family. What will happen to the horses?

Nx

He only had 10 horses running in his silks last season, havinf scaled back significantly in recent times. St Killian's Run has been put down, Ashkazar, Swing Bill, Poker de Sivola and The Package are approaching retirement, leaving only Champion Bumper also-ran Doctor Harper and the two offspring of Lady Cricket of any real import going forward. Would be nice to see that trio continue for the family.

Seemed like those blue and green colours could be seen in just about every jumps race back then. Sad news. Who was his best? Well Chief?

:)

But when i read this

Has sadly passed away according to Matt Chapman

I got it mixed up and opened the champers!

Anyway, the real DJ did come across as a nice guy. Briefly encountered him at Newbury once and he seemed to be very down to earth. 67 is too young

Well Chief almost certainly his best, though with a little more luck, Cyfor Malta could have been a proper superstar. Our Vic and the aforementioned Lady Cricket also great horses to have run in his colours.

A real shame to hear of his passing. RIP.

David Johnson was a name who was synonymous with jumps racing. His money was partly responsible for the Pipe treadmill at its height, and Tony McCoy and Timmy Murphy would have ridden countless winners for him. In fact I wonder where their combination, and indeed the Pipe family combination would stand in an all time league table of owner/jockey and owner/trainer combinations.

He died after a well documented battle with illness, and its a huge loss for his family and for his wider jumps racing family.

There are quite a few owned in partnership as well though. 7 or 8 with Paul Nicholls such as Rocky Creek. Plus the likes of Our Father with David Pipe. I'd imagine he still had over 20 in training.
